Self Empowerment week? I just don't get it. I self empower everyday, without thought. I do not think of myself ever as powerless. Perhaps because I realize how fortunate I am. I'm not a woman in Darfur, for example. This notion of "self empowerment" seems pretty ridiculous when you consider the true challenges many women in the world face. When a woman has to worry about feeding herself or her children, keeping herself or her kids alive, and she does it, day in and day out, that isn't being EMPOWERED, self or otherwise. That is survival. Once again, western women for the win for vacuousness, in heels or not....

hm, much like Black History Month and Domestic Violence Awareness Month, I think this a sad commentary on our society when it is necessary to to highlight a week or a month to recognize something we should be remembering ALL OF THE TIME. It suggests that it is somehow natural to NOT recognize black achievements or to remember domestic violence or to be empowered women. It does not sit well with me.

This week my family suffered the loss of my 88 year old Granny. She was the perfect example of an empowered woman, she went to medical school in post-war Britain despite being a married mother. She ended up as the Head of the World Society for Paediatric Dentistry. She was a Communist, a feminist and rabid anti-apartheid campaigner. She taught her daughters how to be strong women and her son how to treat women, so when I was born there was no idea of women being anything but equal (if not a little bi superior). So although I don't need to celebrate female empowerment, this week I will be celebrating my Gran, the strongest woman I knew.

@exelizabeth: Thanks, it's strange I've been wallowing since it happened, but thinking about her in this way, all her achievements, how she felt about us, it's helped. I can be sad she's gone, but so proud of who she was to the world and to me.

Maybe to you, women and power are like peanut butter and jelly and you can't imagine one without the other.

At times I feel this way. But most of the time, I think that what I imagine powerful women to be is often just evidence of strength or ability to cope and not in essence power or powerful. Example: I'd like to think of the single mothers in my family as powerful, but when it comes down to semantics/theory, but the notion of them being powerful doesn't hold up.

/I need to go think about this.

This is perfect. When Bettie Page died, I tried to think of the best comment I could make to indicate why I was glad to know of her but couldn't see her life as paradigmatically empowering, and what I came up with was something like: "you were a living testament to women's strength in a culture that simultaneously fetishizes and hates them," which is sort of like what you wrote.
