THESE PEOPLE ARE TERRORISTS. Why is that so difficult for the government to fathom? If they were making these threats against anyone else they'd be thrown into prison. After 9/11 people were held and questioned just because they were Middle Eastern. I can't say the word 'bomb' anywhere in an airport without being detained and interrogated and searched, for a damn good reason. I can't even take a bottle of water on an airplane. After all the violence against abortion providers and clinics, why isn't there at least some level of the vigilance there was and still is after 9/11? I don't mean to say that this is on the same level as 9/11, but these are religious extremists, terrorists attacking doctors and their patients for obtaining and performing legal, safe medical procedures, on American soil! Why are they getting away with this bullshit? Where is the outrage, besides from here?
I've seen Dr. Carhart appear on several news programs to discuss what he does and Dr. Tiller's murder. He's an amazing man for what his beliefs and actions, but I don't know how I feel about him being made into a quasi-flack for the pro-choice side, and that's what's happening when middle America tunes in to these shows.
He's not a brilliant speaker (not that I should cast a stone) and I wonder if the way he articulates our arguments is helping or harming. Very few people are given such public platforms to voice pro-choice sentiments in this increasingly silent culture, and I don't think it's fair to him or us that he be placed in the position he's been put in here.
These people are domestic terrorists like Timothy McVeigh so can I make a citizens arrest? Or should I just email the FBI and remind the morons of this?? Assholes
@MissFiFi: I'm really confused by the US Government's failure to call these acts what they are: terrorism.
I mean, I know he's got other things on his mind, but c'mon Obama!
I've posted this once on Jez before. There are several groups going to Omaha this weekend to defend and support Dr. Carhart. We can't let these crazy groups like Operation Rescue be the only voice out there! We should help make it loud and clear that we're standing up for abortion doctors and women's rights to choices. Even if you can't make it out to Nebraska, help spread the word, make a donation or start promoting clinic defense wherever you are.

I started watching Spooks (BBC) on Netflix this week, and the first episode was about how the Americans wanted an anti-choice terrorist who had hidden in the UK (and was planning a series of attacks against doctors there) back desperately in order to show some success in the war on terror.
I can't watch the video at work, so for now I'm going to imagine Rachel sticking out her tongue at the end and going "By the way, I'm a lesbian. I don't have reproductive sex. Doesn't that drive you just crazy, Mr. Terry, that I'm violating God's will that way?" Then she plays him off to the sounds of Tegan and Sara.
@CurtCole: Since the election, it's been like opposite land for me.
I yell about terrorists.
I yell at people to move to another country if they hate it here so much.
I yell at people about being patriotic.
I yell at people to respect out president.
It's crazy!
This is such a scary prospect. How is it that we live in America, and basically condone this kind of terrorism in our own backyards?
What was heartening about this interview however, was when he mentioned he was training two more well-established doctors to perform these tricky and necessary procedures, and he'd also received requests from a whole bunch more doctors wanting to be trained by him. I'm glad skilled and compassionate professionals have taken up this difficult mantle. It gives me hope.
@hydrogen_jukebox: Absolutely. My main worry when it comes to abortion provision in the US (I'm in the UK) is that medical students and newly qualified medical professionals are simply going to turn their backs on that branch of practice because of all the stress/fear that inevitably comes along with being an abortion provider. It's great to hear from Dr. Carhart that this shit may be having the exact opposite effect of the anti-choice brigade's intent. And their intent is very MUCH terrorism - the use of violence or threats to intimidate and coerce. It absolutely needs to be viewed as terrorism by the US government and treated accordingly.
@hydrogen_jukebox: I was just going to post the same thing. While the assassination of Dr. Tiller may have stirred the passions of the crazies, it has also galvanized the resolve of the good guys. Thank you, Medical Students for Choice. Be loud and firm!
You know, between the murderous "pro-lifers", the birthers, the let's let more people get sick and die rather than give Democrats and electoral boost people, the torture committed in my name by my country, my deep well of outrage may actually be getting depleted. I feel worn out by it all. I could use some really good political news PRONTO to give me the energy to get as riled up as I need to be.
@dreamweave: I am holding out faith that the health insurance reform will come through, because if I don't I'm going to scream.
Sometimes it feels like these people are standing in the doorway of a hospital screaming "SEGREGATION NOW, SEGREGATION TOMORROW..." only instead of people of color, they're referring to the (disproportionately non-white) lower class and to women.
@dreamweave: In the words of the beloved Dick Cheney, maybe the insurgency is in it's final throes. It's what I'm hoping for, that this "noise" is the last gasp for the batshit crazy racist motherfuckers in this country.
@dreamweave: Too much sense. Though at least these days the man in the Oval Office is trying to make it better. It's slow going to be sure, but at least he is not like the previous occupant, whose mission in life seemed to be seeing what fresh horror he could visit on us next.
If these nutjobs think it's ok the compare Obama to Hitler, I think we should compare Randall Terry to Osama bin Laden. At least it's a more accurate correlation.
@desertbloom79: I'm with you. I consider people like Randall Terry domestic terrorists. They have an extreme agenda and aren't afraid of violence to achieve their ends. How is Terry any different than anyone else who justifies violence by citing a cause led by a higher authority?
Quit using reasonable, measured language. Get mad, call them by their true names. It's time we called people like Terry what they are: terrorists against women, against the rule of law, against health care providers.
The $88 dollar abortion statistic sounds a lot better without any context. The average monthly salary in China is 660 Yuan. The average monthly salary of an American is over $2000. We wouldn't say that a $1900 abortion is all that cheap, no?
@schweppes: You can always be counted on to bring a sense of reason and context to a discussion, my dear schweppes. Plus I was just reading (belatedly) the article in NYTimes mag from last Sunday saying that many of the abortions happening in China are gender-specific to remove female fetuses. Not a pretty picture.
It makes me happy that the guy in this picture has no qualms about the pink sign. Not to mention standing up for women's health. Men feminists always warm my heart. :D
