    The only thing that worries me is this: "All but Ahmadenijad have made deliberate appeals to female voters." It makes me nervous that the female voters and their male sympathizers will be splintered between the other three candidates, and that Ahmedenijad will somehow pull ahead. I hope so much that that doesn't happen.

    I think it's important to explicitly say that the President of Iran does not control the military, has no ability to declare war or peace, and makes few foreign policy decisions. The Supreme Leader does that, and he's not going anywhere.

    This is AMAZING Megan, thank you! What are actually poll numbers looking like, though? It's optimistic to hope for change if 3 of the 4 candidates are in favor of more rights for women, but is this echoing what voters are demanding? Or are the women fighting for rights bound to be overwhelmed by a more conservative majority?

    It's astounding that there are places where the term "morality police" refers to an actual commissioned group of government employees. It is something to keep in mind when I throw that phrase around in reference to things that go on here in the US.

    it seems, based on this, that a switch has been flipped in Iran and hopefully it's lights out for Ahmadenijad. I can't understand how he got elected anyway.

    Megan, thank you for this post. I was pretty uninformed about the Iranian elections, save for 30 second updates on recent episodes of Morning Edition. I feel better informed/filled with white hot knowledge after having read that. Great work.

    This girl fought back when the morality police tried to take her away.

    they put girls in busses and take them to undisclosed locations, for crimes such as showing too much hair or not adhering to the strict dress code.

    Persian women are the most persevering I know.


    I just found out today that I cant vote in Canada, unless im in Ottawa, Im getting on the bus tonight, the 6 hour ride will be worth it if we can change something*.
