Why Didn't Whip It Bring In More Bank?
Spring Breakdown Reflects A Break Down For Women In Comedies

Also, their ad budget must have sucked- if not for Jez I would not have heard of it.

The week early preview I thought made it sound desperate and the promotion all involved Drew Barrymore, not the actual storyline.
Oh and Zombieland stars two of my favorite young actresses today, and they are GREAT in it. Not sure why it has to be believed that women might have chosen a zombie flick because of dudes. Heaven forbid us chicks actually like funny zombie movies right? The reason I walked into Zombieland was the awesome reviews, the fact that I knew I was going to laugh after one of the most stressful days in my life and I wanted to check out the celebrity cameo before it was ruined. Maybe if Hollywood cared more about the duration of a film at the box office as opposed to its first weekend, this wouldnt be a story at all.

thank-you, I'll take my million dollar check now Paramount.

I also don't think it's an effort to sabotage Drew Barrymore, who really seems to attract goodwill.
Zombieland simply looked funnier and less predictable. And HELL if the two female leads in there didn't kick ass--including a young teen! Of course, you know the humans will win--but you really have no idea where or how. And that matters.
I will see Whip It tomorrow, but based on the reviews (most of which mention its predictability), I'm kind of anticipating low-stakes mom and daughter fights, maybe she trips in her pageant gown (oopsie!), lots of "you go girl" hugging at the rink (after a "why don't you take your skates and go home!" hazing period), and then a make-up scene with mom...let me guess: she shows up to see her daughter skate and has a change of heart! Aw!
Zombieland, I just held on for the ride. And you can't beat an unanticipated celebrity cameo.

Maybe A Bend It Like Beckham kind of campaign would have made more sense. That movie was about young girls playing sports and it made a mint.
Also just because teen girls came out in droves for Juno doesn't mean Ellen Page can open a movie.

i support just about anything that's for women, by women, but i think that lumping movies together in this way (zombieland=boys, whip it=girls) is pretty sexist and ridiculous. women can think that shooting zombies are hilarious just as much as men can appreciate a cheesy girl power movie. do i run in a weird circle of friends that i went with a mixed group of males and females to both movies? i don't understand why the two movies are being polarized in this post.

Obviously, to each their own when it comes to movies and yes, it's a little hard to beat a movie when zombies are involved. But don't completely write Whip It! off. It's not the greatest film that ever lived and ever will be made, but it's got more to offer than some people assume.

Also I agree that perhaps we have 'quirky' fatigue.

I've heard more buzz about Whip It than Zombieland weirdly and it's making me not want to watch it.
It's a 'too cool' hip movie for women where the protagonist is a typical young lady that's bucking societal pressure and being a unique special snowflake with special quirks inserted here & there (collects rocks, plays the mandolin, whatever) to make her oh so special & different. MPDG syndrome.
I'd rather watch actual chick-flicks no matter how mindless or bad rather than shows like this.

She has no special quirks. She just decides she likes the idea of roller derby and goes for it.
I swear, I truly don't get this attitude. I mean, watch what you want, but good grief. Girl characters who don't do the typical, expected, gendered activities? Girl characters with quirks? These are -bad- things? These are problems? Those things are WORSE than brainless movies that tell you that women are all better off with a man?
I seriously give up on people.

I take issue with the article saying that women would only watch Zombieland because their guy drags them to it - and therein that they can't speak up to say they'd rather watch something else.
I am still a little sick of empowered cliched girl power movies. Roller derby = the cool current "IT" quirk.
I'm sure at least some of the characters in this movie will have annoying (make audience love em) quirks.
Not to say I won't watch it eventually but I'd rather watch Zombieland (zombies) or Surrogates (sci-fi) and wait for this on DVD.

The only things I've seen about Whip-It were here. I didn't even know it was out this weekend.
Is this a widespread problem? I feel like that might have something to do with it.

Nope. It's original. I heard it was originally supposed to be a tv show though.

Also, I saw an ad that suggested that Ellen Paige's rollergirl moniker is "Babe Ruthless"...can this be confirmed, because if so, that is kickass.

Saw Whip It and loved it.
