The Family Circle is Number 3? You have got to be kidding me. I see people choosing to read pamphlets about gingivitis over The Family Circle at the dentist's office. I get this is about marketing a magazine as a brand, but seriously--Cosmo is a brand. It is well known in pop culture for a number of reasons (mostly bad). What's Family Circle ever done?!

Without The Economist, I would still be completely clueless about the causes of inflation in Zimbabwe.
Without Cosmo, I would still be completely clueless about how all men want me to put my fingers in their assholes whilst giving blowjobs. #womensmagazines
@nyc-caribbean-ragazza: It's always under an article called something like "WHAT HE REALLY CRAVES IN BED" and then the article goes off on putting things in his butt. #womensmagazines
Sorry, but why are The Economist; National Geographic and People "no-brainers", but Cosmo an "interesting choice"? This is purely about brand visibility; it's not an award for content quality. I bet if you stopped 10 women on any city street in the world and asked them to name a women's magazine, the majority of them would immediately say Cosmo. We may not like it, but the brand is pretty solid. #womensmagazines
@Diziet_Sma: exactly, for many its "the bible" as Elle Woods calls it. Its going to be a rather small subsect of people that read the Economist or National Geographic. #womensmagazines
@Diziet_Sma: I assume National Geographic because they have a TV channel, documentaries, books, websites, stock houses, etc. If there really is a magazine that is a "brand," then Nat Geo is it. #womensmagazines
@Sputnik_Sweetheart: I want to strangle whoever decided to rebrand National Geographic as 'Nat Geo'. Next on my hit-list: the fuckwit who changed the SciFi channel to 'Syfy'.
@Diziet_Sma: For me, the Syfy people are first. It looks like it's read "seye-fee".
Then whoever decided G4 was way cooler than Tech Tv.
Then the Nat Geo people. #womensmagazines
I personally see Cosmopolitan as a more successful brand than the Economist. I actually read the latter and rarely the former, but Economist tends to be somewhat cultish, nerdy and has very low circulation. Cosmo has its name everywhere and has branded itself so that it can sell products and sponsors several events such as Cosmo's Hottest Bachelors and employs items which require reader's to vote which makes it a bit more interactive which all ties back to selling more magazines. #womensmagazines
@erinna: I disagree. I think as a brand the Economist is super successful. I don't have one libertarian facebook book friend that doesn't list it in their activities. I just happened to not agree with the magazines fans... #womensmagazines
@soykatrina: well yeah, a good portion of my friends read the Economist as well, but it is still rather niche. The Atlantic has a good take on how The Economist has managed to thrive without "branding" [www.theatlantic.com]#womensmagazines
@erinna: Exactly. It might not sell as much as Cosmo or People, but its branding is great. It's niche, but they positioned themselves that way and then built their brand around it.
Also, its not clear from my earlier comment that I think Cosmo also does a great job of branding. And again, its because they know their market and what is expected out of it. #womensmagazines
I think its amazing that she's on all this magazines and is relishing her moment. Coming from a usual dorky feeling girl, I would kill for a magazine like Harper's Bazaar to put me in beautiful digs and take lovely artsy photos of me.
Can we not just celebrate the fact that the world is paying attention to a woman who is adorable, intelligent and talented?
I really hate the sentiment in this post that a woman can only be smart or pretty - not both. So she wears her glasses in some photo shoots, and chooses to focus on pretty dresses in another. So what? I hate the idea that women who care about their looks, or like to feel pretty sometimes, or aren't completely serious and focused on "serious" things at all times are shallow.
@RiloKilo: The idea that it is a surprise that someone can be both smart AND pretty is indeed an old and boring cliche. The problem is that to be highlighted in most magazines, a woman has to be either pretty, or smart and pretty. But smart alone doesn't cut it.
Is she really that different in this photo spread than she is in any other setting? Tina Fey is not Liz Lemon! She's allowed to go out without mustard stains on her clothing. Anyone who's seen her on the red carpet knows she's pretty glam when she wants to be, so really, I don't see the problem here. It's not like they posed her in lingerie. These are beautiful outfits that befit a woman who's not a fashion plate but still knows what look lovely on her.
So that gold Michael Kors sash is like $1,200, but for those of you who are curious, they sell basically the same product for $24 at AA. And I thought it was overpriced.
(But still bought it in purple. I'm a slave to fashion!)
Are we actually taking issue with someone showing off clothes in a fashion magazine?
Honestly, this just seems misguided. If that's all Tina Fey was doing now, that'd be one thing. But in no way has she compromised herself or her work. And saying that she's somehow inherently compromising her work by posing in a fashion magazine is silly. Would we say the same about Michelle Obama? I think not. Then why are we eager to be like OH NOEZ SHE HAS BEEN IN MAGAZINES TOO MANY TIMES FOR PRETTINESS. Why is it OK for someone who literally is paid to be pretty, a model, to do this work, but somehow it's "lessening" someone who has many other talents too?
I honestly don't see the problem here. It's great to see an actor outside their normal role. Could say it prevents something like the "Seinfield Curse". We can see actors as more then there single characters. Both shoots added together do a great job at showing her as a smart, fun, sexy, talented, intelligent women. You can look smart and sexy, there is nothing wrong with leaning to each side every so often.
So yeah, I am glad to see the glamor shoot. God forbid she get to have a bit of fun and dress up outside her tv personna.
