Palin's a hypocrite. It's so disingenuous of her to suddenly have all this outrage. If she described a change or some kind of personal growth that this incident has evinced, I'd have some respect for her, but nope, it's just an excuse to be on camera.
And I cannot stress enough the main point of this issue which is that anyone that heard the jokes can tell you THESE JOKES WERE NOT ABOUT THE PALIN GIRLS. They were clearly- CLEARLY- calling out Spitzer and A-od for being creepy-pervy douche bags.
I need to honestly know if anyone here actually thought Letterman was referring to Willow Palin. I mean honestly I'm willing to bet a large majority of the public didn't even know there was a Willow Palin. Palin daughter= Bristol.
Why is standing up against EITHER slut-shaming or statutory rape jokes constructed as "defending Sarah Palin." Sarah Palin doesn't need defending. Girls and women as a class DO. I don't oppose Letterman's "jokes" because I like Sarah Palin; I do it because I'm a goddamn feminist.
@PeteRR: Wait a second. First, why are you directing this comment to me? Sexism is wrong no matter who it's aimed at; I said that in my other comment.
I do understand, though, that it's hard to stick up for someone who'd throw YOU under the bus if she had the opportunity, and only opposes sexism and hateful rhetoric when it's aimed at her and her family. And part of the frustration comes from hearing Republicans (that means you) cry foul on misogyny when they glorify it in every other instance. It'd be nice to hear Palin's Republican defenders stand up against sexism when it's directed at, oh, anyone else but one of their own. You haven't been here in months, as far as I can tell. Because just like Palin, you're a hypocrite who only recognizes sexism when it hurts you or your political party personally.
@Endora: Is it about feeling sorry for her, or is it about standing up for certain principles? Even if I don't like someone (as is very, VERY much the case with Sarah Palin), I don't think it's ok to stand idly by when she is described as looking like a "slutty flight attendant," or when rape jokes are made about, well, anyone.
I can stand up for my principles and still find Sarah Palin revolting as a person, and even acknowledge that I doubt she'd ever do the same for me. The fact that she's horrifying on multiple levels doesn't justify the jokes.
@largirl: yeah, she didn't bring him into it, she just noted that when he wanted family to be off limits, it seemed to only apply to his and not to hers...which is a little odd, but her teen pregnant was knocked up.
FOX brought obama into it, which in standard fox form, is going way too far.
She might have started off defending her daughters, but now she's just using it and them to make it all about her. That's what bugs me about her. She's desperate to keep her name in the air for 2012. She sure has never backed away from cheap or hateful remarks about others when it served her purpose. "Real" Americans, my ass.
@Ginmar Rienne: Exactly. I think Dave (who I love, love, love) made some really stupid, offensive, inexcusable jokes, and it's right that he be called out.
That said, Sarah Palin's response increasingly smacks of political posturing, thereby lessening my sympathy for her - but not for her daughters - though it in no way makes me any less pissed at Dave.
@queenieinmanhattan: Dave apologized but, damn, I expect better from him. Sarah Palin has never apologized for rousing her fans to hate speech and near-threats, and she's just using this for more attention---for herself, not for the real issues girls face, especially not those of her own daughters, who she used to promote the all-American family image.
@Ginmar Rienne: But all of that doesn't make the fact of the jokes any more ok. I understand she's a hypocrite, but that doesn't mean she deserves to be called a "slutty flight attendant," or to have rape jokes made about either of her daughters.
It's not about defending her. It's about standing up against bigotry. Racism is wrong when it's against Condi Rice, Colin Powell, or Alberto Gonzalez. And yet with misogyny, everyone seems to be, like, "But I don't like her" without a touch of irony.
I felt so bad for Matt Lauer this morning. Not only did he have to interview Palin, he also had to interview Carrie Prejean in the same hour. He should get hazard pay.
This issue is not about Sarah Palin, people. It's about a young girl, about whom an INCREDIBLY insensitive joke was made. How is this about Sarah Palin at all, beneath the very surface?
I would balk at defending Sarah, or even Bristol at this point, who is in an adult role regardless of her age, but Willow is still a little girl. Furthermore, I find the excuse, "but I thought it was Bristol!!" to be pretty weak. Even if he did think he was talking about Bristol, the joke was reprehensible, simply because of the content.
Just because she's weak on women's issues doesn't mean we should be. Is this any different than an "asking for it" argument?
@annainthebox: I actually think thats a ridiculously weak excuse as well. Personally, I had never even heard the name Willow before all this, and Bristols names has been plastered everywhere.
Also, I'm sorry but the original "slutty flight attendant" comment was shitty and sexist.
@annainthebox: Because she's making it about herself. Look, I don't agree with making jokes about someone's children like that, and I wager no one else here is, but you're talking about a woman who publicly exploited her own children for political gain and continues to do so and then whines when it all backfires. This is all about her and she's continuing to drag it through for herself. As Anna pointed out, she's trying to make it a Republican talking point. Gearing up for 2012 huh?
And he didn't "think" he was talking about Bristol, he was. The joke had nothing to do with rape.
@EkaterinaBallerina: I'm not like, OUTRAGED on her behalf but I also wont make any apologies for Letterman because, I'm sorry, but this isn't the first time he's made "jokes" of this nature and I don't like them no matter who the target is because they marginalize women.
@bluebears: I'm not defending Letterman. I think they're BOTH wrong in this situation. I don't understand why this is either/or. They are both acting ridiculous.
@SemiCharmedQuark: right? the only place I heard about it was this website. which just goes to show you how much of a non-issue objectifying women is in our mainstream culture.
@EkaterinaBallerina: she's acting like her usual grandstanding bullshit self. he's acting incredibly sexist and offensive. its not an either or but lets call a spade a spade her.
And perhaps this is why I, personally, am having trouble getting as worked up as I would in another case - both are wrong, but Dave's just making a lameass (sexist) joke (which I wouldn't stand for if one of my friends made it), but Palin is being more than ridiculous. She is, as usual, trying to whip conservatives into a frenzy and after two men were just killed because some loonytunes conservatives got whipped into a frenzy? MY FUSE HAS RUN OUT ON JUST BEING ANNOYED OR DISGUSTED BY HER AND HER ILK.
@annainthebox: The thing that drives me nuts about this is that people are saying that she pimped out her children in the campaign, so she can't complain about others making jokes at their expense. It is not her children's fault that their mother used them as political props!
I am also tired of people letting this stuff go because they don't like Sarah Palin, or because Letterman is just a comedian and he makes jokes about men too! I'm sorry, but there is a huge difference between making fun of Rod Blagovich's hair and saying Sarah Palin looks slutty.
Palin was presented with a situation where a late-night comedian poked fun at her 18 year old daughter's out-of-wedlock pregnancy. Instead of just objecting to that, I suspect she realised it just doesn't have the sort of punch needed to get her in the bigger papers and onto the better shows, so she decided to skew it a bit. And now she's parading around claiming that Letterman is an old lech who fantasizes about her 14 year old daughter being statutorily raped during a baseball game.
This is not protection of women or of family. This is DELIBERATELY introducing a 14 year old, uninvolved girl into the debate, purely for political gain.
There is no upside for Willow here. People are now asking if her mother is implying Letterman would be a danger to Willow, and Palin herself is happy to let that just be "out there". Willow is fourteen, for chrissakes. Did she need to be exploited in this way, did she need a national conversation about her being raped? Hell no. And from what I can see, the blame for her involvement in this entire thing lies squarely at her mother's feet.
Sarah Palin, I have a hard time riling up my feminist side when I sense you are less about protecting your kids, and more about sacrificing your 14 year old daughter on the altar of media coverage.
@limber: Yes!It was so obvious he was talking about Bristol & the slutty flight attendant thing, I have a hard time getting upset about that too. I think it was in poor taste & crass, but she also allowed her own party to campaign on how "hot" & "sexy" she is. I fully understand there's a lot of discussion to be had about how female politicians are perceived in terms of looks but it's very difficult for me to be upset when she actively condones & participates in her own sexualization for her benefit and then complains when someone makes a crass but not terribly vulgar joke out of it.
If she really wanted to come out on top she would have either ignored it altogether or put out a short statement saying she didn't appreciate the comments and moved on. This isn't about her taking offense to his jokes as much as it's about her platform of faux outrage staged in order to score network television interviews. What a complete dickhead she is. And I'm torn, because on one hand I want her to fade into obscurity, and on the other I enjoy watching her make the far right into an even bigger mockery than it already is.
You know, it's extra super obnoxious that Sarah Palin seems to think it's okay to parade her children around --like so many Alaskan wolf pelts-- for political gain, yet when anyone makes any sort of comment that might not translate to Sarah Palins Children= Sarah 4 Prezidentt!, she acts shocked-SHOCKED! that her children are being publicly scrutinized.
Actually, I think it's Sarah Palin who owes an apology to women. To say that Letterman does is really an interesting thing to say, Sarah, since you only seem to recognize sexism when you can find some political benefit to it. And you only seem to get mad about your family being exploited when you don't have control over the exploitation.
And if we're really going to talk about males who should be kept away from your daughters? Really? You want to go to there? Hi, Levi Johnston here to see you.

Here's a case in point. Jezebel's sister site calling Carrie Prejean a "Porn model". Sickening.

But I guess that's okay because she opposes same sex marriage.
