I wasn't on the same political wavelength as Mr. Safire, but I always thought him a rational old-school conservative who enjoyed debate and respected those with opposing views. Today's frothing-at-the-mouth wingnuts could learn something from him.

I also always loved his "On Language" column in the Times. RIP, sir.

Oh sadz. I've been a sucka for this Nixon apologist's weekly "On Language" column in the New York Times magazine. He was a conservative ass, but by Lord, he was a witty writer. RIP.

And so another of the thoughtful, intelligent old-guard conservatives (who I still disagreed with) passes away, giving more room to the modern whacked out "conservatives" like Beck, O'Reilly, Hannity, Malkin, Limbaugh, Coulter, Savage (Weiner), et al. I wonder if he felt any affinity at all to the modern Republican party any more? When a party's base is motivated by xenophobia, homophobia, racism, sexism and intentionall ignorance... I'm not sure it can last. At least, I hope not.

I mean, it was fun to read his stuff even if only on an aesthetic level, regardless of whether you disagreed with him. That's what intelligent polemic is all about, no? Glenn Beck is a fucking braying donkey with zero brain cells.

@snugbug: Yes this. I never agreed with folks him Safire or Buckley, but I could always appreciate the way they articulated their arguments. I guess David Brooks can fall into that category for me now, but it's the squeaky asses that are getting all the airtime. Prayers to his family.
