I feel for the residents of this area. I also feel for all of the helpless wild and domestic animals that are caught up in these fires.
I love my cats, but I also get lots of enjoyment from the birds, squirrels, raccoons, bunnies and possums that frequent my yard and neighborhood. I'm sure many of these residents feel the same way and are just heartbroken knowing the possible fate of their beloved woodland friends.

I now haz a sad!

@stacyinbean: Because it started near a ranger station. I don't like the name because of the Station nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island that burned down several years ago and killed many people. Now THAT was the Station Fire.

@Skellatrix: I think the fires get unofficially "named" pretty quickly when they first occur, and most probably aren't expected to be big news events. So "fire by the ranger's station" became "station fire" because the firefighters were either unaware of the other fire, or more likely, did not have time or energy to think about the repercussions of naming the fire.

Yikes. Hearing "the Station Fire" brings back memories of the Station nightclub fire in RI that killed around 100 people.

I'm not one to pray, but I really hope people get through this without further loss of life/injury. =/

@dripdrop: We've had 100+ temperatures for the past couple of weeks, plus a summer of no rain, plus brush that hasn't been cleared or burned in over 60 years. It was a recipe for disaster. The terrain it's burning is incredibly steep and hard to access, so firefighters can't get to it very easily. What's even better is that it's not even our fire season yet, the Santa Ana winds don't start until October.

I can hardly wait.

@Lymed: I'm also amazed at how many fires get started because a car overheats so the driver pulls over. Unfortunately, the driver usually ends up on dry grass (because that's what's on the side of the roads and highways) and a fire starts. But what else are you supposed to do when your car overheats?

My flatmate had to evacuate her house in La Crescenta. :( She's here with her sis and dog, and I don't know what to say to her about it... Just that I hope everything works out.

Whenever people and animals are subject to disaster I feel like hugging my teddy bear Diego. The only shining star is the outpouring of love and support from people who know that in times like these, we need all of the hugs we can get.

This is so awful. Love and hugs and prayers to everyone in Australia. I fervently hope the firefighters can get the fires under control in the very very near future, so that the country can at least begin to recover from all this devastation.
