A note about unfortunate names...

In the first half of last century, my great grandfather and his wife came to America from Avalino, Italy. Nonna was pregnant with my grandfather. For three generations, the men in the family had gone by the name 'Adolfo.' "No!" declared my great grandfather (called "Otto" in America) "My son will be an American! He will have an American name. No one will ever mock him for not belonging."

And that is how, in 1938, my grandfather was named "Adolph."

There could be something else going on that we just don't know about. That'd be my guess. I have relatives who adopted two kids after their jailed white supremacist parents lost their rights as parents. They were in jail for doing drugs. The daughter was named Aryan.

Oh for fuck's sake. The state has NO business telling parents how they can raise their children ideologically. The state has business telling people to care them physically, educationally, and medically, but I draw the line when teh state gets to decide whether I am teaching them proper "values." Because you know goddamn WELL that my "values" are not proper to a huge and scary part of the population.

These people are assholes, but I am squarely on their side on this one.

At first I thought they couldn't seriously take those children away because their parents gave them abhorrent names. And then I thought, isn't that kind of negligent (maybe not so negligent that it warrants seizure of the kids, but still...)? I mean, you've got to be a pretty idiotic not to think about how those names would affect the children's lives. I have a hard time calling it child abuse, but it is pretty awful. As awful as those people from the Westboro Baptist Church teaching 5 year old children to sing the song "God hates the world." Does this count as emotional negligence, raising your children in a hateful belief system? Also, as much as I support freedom of speech and civil liberties, doesn't the right to swing your fist end at the other guy's nose? The kids' lives and social upbringing will definitely be affected by this.

Ugh, I am quite conflicted about this.

I don't agree with their beliefs, but if they haven't committed any crimes in the name of their beliefs and aren't causing harm to others, I don't think they should have their children taken away.

As a Jewish woman who has lived in Germany and had family killed in the Holocaust, I would never call for their children to be taken away for their deviant thoughts about race and Nazis. It's a very DANGEROUS precedent. Abuse? Neglect? Absolutely. Viewpoint discrimination? NO WAY.

@JinxyMcDeath: I think it's incredibly disrespectful and hurtful to the Germans who have spent fifty years rebuilding their nation and working through their history. The ignorance these parents display just goes to show that their horizons aren't terribly broad.

I wouldn't want their kids taken away for their politics. But naming your children Adolf Hitler, Aryan Nation and Himmler? They might be planing on homeschooling the kids, but what happens when they're adults? When they want to enter the workforce? What if these kids play and get beaten up by others in their neighborhood when they're older? That's why the names scream "neglect" and "emotional abuse" to me.
