@cellophane: She's not the curator, but she works with the curator. The curator is one of those ongoing positions, like chef and steward, that stays with the house from administration to administration.

Also, the president can request paintings from the National Gallery! I would go for the da Vinci or a Vermeer just to fuck with them, but I'm sure Obama will stick to something more American.

@Hamsterpants: Dude, did you see Obama introduce Stevie Wonder for the Gershwin Award? I too felt like I had died and gone to sparkly heaven. The president listens to the same music I do! It's so fucking weird. Obama was so cute and funny, and you could tell Michelle totally wanted to dance. Everyone in the house was just grooving, and the audience was primarily non-white, and it was all so freaking COOL. I know the world economy is in the tank, but moments like these make me really happy.

I think this is fantastic. I grew up right outside DC (moved there when Clinton did, actually) and the shift from the Clinton White House/holiday style to the Bush approach was clear and non-debatable. Where the Clinton's had easy-to-obtain White House tours and accessible Easter Egg Rolls and free snacks at the lighting ceremony...the Bushes did away with the freebies, made tickets to anything really hard to get and made it downright unpleasant to visit the WH (also, it rained on almost every major holiday :).

I'm glad to have things opening back up - and I bet having young kids running around makes that all the more important.

@Mkp-hearts-NYC: I agree, but it is also worth noting that Clinton's were pre 9/11 and security got a lot more strict with regards to White House/government agencies letting in the public, for reasons unrelated to the Bush's being asocial.

I wrote a little essay with my application about how I may not have the most work experience or an impressive degree from an Ivy League institution, but I want to work in the Obama administration and will work my patootie off if given the opportunity. I didn't say patootie in the application, though.
