I don't believe in astrology, Meyer-Briggs is mostly just amusing, and 'essential types' is indeed too simplistic.
But books like this aren't meant as bibles, or no intelligent person should take them as such. As Emily Gould says, it's good reading for two reasons: 1. It's fun, 2. It makes you think about people in a new light, has you considering traits and situations a bit differently.
No dating book, or a library of dating books, can successfully encompass the whole mad world of relationships and pairings. But almost any of these books give me something, at least one thought, that I hadn't had before. A new way to view things, a helpful one.
Taking this sort of thing too seriously is a mistake. This goes for both taking it as gospel, or being upset that it even exists. #francescaliablock
@all
Ok, I'm sorry I was overreacting completely. It's just a visceral thing - I can concede that her books are great etc, but I really think that this kind of mumbo-jumbo can really influence the way that people live their lives (just like astrology), and that its a false faith that can lead to you making bad choices based on whatever wacko ideas some person out there has about the world. Its all a bit of fun I guess - but what if some nutter out there actually broke up with somebody because they're a fucking 'faun' or whatever? I objected to it being posted on Jez because usually its such a fucking rad, down to earth place to go and talk to people who have their heads screwed on. This ain't head-screwed-on talk. #francescaliablock
Even though I've been out of the dating pool for a while, I have an unending love for Francesca (since 1992), and thus will probably pick this up when it's not a rent paycheck.
When I was dating and actually needed a dating guide, there were none I would read. Had this been around, perhaps I could have avoided some dismaying mistakes. #francescaliablock
But even the most rational-minded among us has to admit that people do have essential natures.
No, we do not. The MBTI is not validated and unsupported by science, astrology is a scam, and so is this book--no matter how entertaining, it should be kept in that light: entertaining but useless. Personality is a combination of traits and the situation in which people find themselves, not a fixed state. #francescaliablock
@Her Grace: This! I really dislike it when people hold this up as universal truth. I do love reading books like this for fun though, I love good fiction.
@notwhoyouthoughtiwas: I went through a big FLB phase in high school and early college, and started reading her again this past year. She is every bit as awesome as I remember! #francescaliablock
Going by the incredibly vague descriptions, I am calling myself a Brownie/Banshee. I like brownies and I like screaming at things, so I feel secure that this is the correct life choice. #francescaliablock
@mbprice: I'm actually reading a tawdry series called "The Lords of Satyr." Do you know they grow extra, ahem, manhoods upon the full moon? Well, they do. #francescaliablock
@mbprice: You've Got Chain Mail
There's Something About Fairy

Xander Harris should definitely pick up a copy. He needs some guidance on the dos and don'ts of supernatural dating. Well, I guess for him they're mostly just don'ts. #francescaliablock
@futuremouse: You have earned my love forever. My boyfriend just watched the praying mantis episode of Buffy for the first time and couldn't stop talking about it for three days. #francescaliablock
@charliekohler: I'm having a Buffy day. Every other post reminds me of a different episode. Now I'm just deciding which one to watch when I get home. #francescaliablock
@futuremouse: If I had any of the DVDs at home I'd go with The Zeppo just based off your comment.
Faith: Relax… take your pants off. Xander: Those two concepts are antithetical. #francescaliablock
After having experienced the shittiest dumping of my life this past week... at this point I'd probably settle for a faithful underbridge troll with a job. #francescaliablock

"Of course I couldn't stay with a Faun. I was a Wood Nymph! It was like trying to date the wrong astrological sign."
Incredibly disappointed that Jezebel would stand behind this kind of shit - to be honest, this is the kind of crap that makes women look like idiots.
Agree with the post below that someone must have been paid off to write this. #francescaliablock
