I always tell my boyfriend if we get engaged, I need a big ring to pawn if we ever were to break up. Methinks I'm getting cubic when the time comes, to save money for a nice party of a wedding and a nice house for the marriage. House definitely has priority.

If I was engaged to someone and we broke it off for any reason, I'd probably try to give it back to him. If he declined, I'd sell it or trade it in for sumpin nice for myself. I've been wearing my grandmother's engagement ring for years now, she died when I was really little so I never really knew her. But my granddad (also died when I was wee) proposed to her in 1945 and the ring is engraved and all, with their initials and everything. I had it looked at years ago to make sure the diamond was secure and the jeweler said it's not worth much, also it's set crooked. But I love it anyway and will wear it until I get engaged. Then I'll sock it away for posterity.

It was so pretty.....a huge aquamarine on platinum and diamonds. I miss it so much, it was the ring of my dreams.

After the divorce, I sold my wedding ring/engagement ring combo and got less than $100 for them. I turned it into Christmas presents for the little ones. I also sold ex's signed Brett Favre jersey and turned it into a Christmas present for my new boyfriend. Sweet!

My story: girl meets boy. Boy buys $4000 engagement ring on credit card on which he has already bought tens of thousands of dollars worth of other shit. Girl marries boy, having no knowledge of any of this. Girl works ass of to help boy pay off all credit card debt, essentially paying for own ring in the process. Girl and boy get divorced. Girl sells engagement ring to jewelry store at less than 10% of original price because ring was soldered to wedding ring because boy thought that looked better. Girl meets new boy who is much better. Girl and new boy get cheap rings and get married. To be continued.

I had a co-worker who tried to do this. She was informed that they would give her a grand total of $16.00 for it, seeing as how it was a cubic zirconia ring that her ex had passed off as a real diamond.

Moral of the story: Enjoy the romantic evening of your boyfriend's marriage proposal. But in the cold light of the next morning, get that shit appraised.

I would do this...but not with an engegament ring. I would just want to get rid of all this expensive but ugly as heck crap my grandma has given me over the years...They are all real diamonds and gold but nobody would wear them so I might as well get the money for it.

@Dorotea: I'm the same way. My jewelry doesn't really have any sad emo badness mojo or anything. I have the highest regard for the person who gave it to me, and I continue to hope that person is doing well. It's just...eh, it's just gathering dust, y'know? It's not sad haunted jewelry--It's nice enough. Some of it is even kind of pretty. It's just that I'll never use it.

Maybe someone else will buy it for a reasonable price one day and it'll make them happy. Who knows?

@Dorotea: Yes. After my grandmother died, my grandfather gave me a necklace she wanted me to have. She probably never wore it; it's a flat yellow gold snake chain, probably from QVC. No sentimental value whatsoever, except that I worry I'd hurt my dead grandmother's feelings if I sold it. But with gold so high, I might get some good money for it, and we need money. I'm torn.

I also have a gold ring my college boyfriend gave me. I don't think it's worth much, and it was a bad breakup. I kept it to spite him. Maybe it's time to let it go.

@TheFormerJuneBronson: I got a cubic zirconia necklace from my grandma (through my aunts that probs took the good stuff) after she died. I wore it and it broke, but I keep the pieces because I don't want my grandma to think I didn't appreciate it.(Because she totes keeps track of my jewelry from heaven)

Certainly these women deserve to be paid what their rings are worth, but the idea of buying a "used" engagement ring creeps me out. An ex-coworker's husband proposed with a ring he bought from a pawn shop. There's just no happy reason to pawn an engagement ring. It's either stolen or carrying bad memories.

Or, maybe I'm just superstitious.

@LaComtesse: Antiques don't get to me at all, if they're purchased from a reputable dealer. It was the pawn shop aspect that bothered me. I just have a mental picture of this old scary pawn shop in my hometown, and it makes me sad to think that a token of marriage, even a happy one, could somehow end up there.

@allycat: Before my parents divorced (after 30 years of marriage), my dad pawned my mom's engagement and wedding rings. The impact that had on her--and still does--would keep me from ever, EVER buying a pawn shop ring.
