Call me a hippie-dippy wannabe earth mother type, but I found the dolphin's curiosity really touching. The rest of it? Not so much.

Then there was that whole "800-lb carnivore sniffing mah belly!" feeling.

But really? Babies being born make me all mushy, dolphins or not.

You know they have actually BANNED water births in Ireland after newborn babies drowned during them? Deciding that you want to give birth in the water is already one of the most selfish things you can do to your child, in my mind, but giving birth in the water with animals present? Wow. You're going to make a great mom.

@laureltreedaphne: I checked that out, it seems they're thinking of bringing it back, and I can't find any reliable source suggesting water birth is unsafe. You might be right, but could you link me to something that backs it up? I'd never heard that before and I'm interested. My friend is heavily pregnant so I'd like to let her know if water birth has been proved to be unsafe.

They talked about this in "The Cove", about the shitty things we do to captive dolphins (uh, in addition to the ones we eat) for our own pleasure and entertainment. Had to see it to believe it.

Where was this video made? How is this legal? How disgusting. I'd be pissed off if someone discharged their afterbirth all over my house.

Why, why, how can people think this is a good idea? Even captive, "tame" dolphins (especially in the shittier-kept facilities with poor trainers) have gone batshit on "guests" in swim-with-dolphin facilities before. This is criminally stupid/unfair for both baby and dolphin.

You know, in addition to all the other questions already raised (cleanliness of the pool, effects of human blood/placental tissue for the dolphin, wild animal + vulnerable people, etc.), I had to laugh that she was wearing a bikini top. I mean, you're giving birth in front of several people, a dolphin, and are filming it for the whole world to see, but you're concerned about someone seeing your nipples?

@utensil42: It might be for comfort-- my boobs are on the larger side, and spending a long time without a bra on can be really uncomfortable. I don't need a ton of support if I'm lounging around, but a tank or cami with a shelf bra, or in this case a bikini top, is more comfortable.

@formergr: Yeah, I get that as mine are a bit larger as well. But, a bikini top doesn't offer much and in water it's just not as necessary.

You know, as a homebirth and waterbirth advocate, I gotta say....

No. No to the wild animals surrounding the vulnerable birthing women and newborn.

I mean.... I'm not gonna ask for this to be outlawed or anything, but I don't think it's a wise idea! @.@

@nex0s: Dolphins are good with people in pain. I've seen video of them nudging people that have back pain etc. and actually giving those people relief etc. I wonder if he'd rub her back during contractions.

@KentuckyBabe: *Some* dolphins are *sometimes* good with people in pain - the fact is that a dolphin is a wild animal (even if it's been "tamed" it's still essentially a wild animal), and you never know how one will react to humans. Dolphins have been known to go NUTS on people who got in their space. I don't think this is safe under any circumstances.
