I love her, after seeing her on The Daily Show I got through my swine flu by watching her clips. A friend & I have been having an ongoing debate about rape culture since a Shapely Prose post about a month ago, and I sent her this vid and said, "Wanda Sykes has the answer!" #wandasykes
@evility: Now I can't even try to pretend that SNL has been funny in the past decade. I can just barely make a case that it was ever funny. That being said I have never seen anything with her having any role larger than a brief cameo that was still funny. #wandasykes
@MyNameIsChris: Yes, but Sykes is hit or miss which, to me, means she is still trying. She takes more risks, and is more likely to say something appalling than something tired.
I'm willing to watch someone fail at trying, but I'm sick to death of, and won't be, watching boys succeed at telling jokes from 1958. #wandasykes
@thehighshelf: I don't think she takes risks... I think she says fairly typical "shocking" things. The only risks I see happening in comedy are people trying to find a new format or a new way of fucking with the audience. People doing absurdist things and more far out attempts at pushing boundaries. Standard issue "he/she did NOT just say that" routines are pretty much the standard.
That being said, whenever I read things about her she seems like a pretty cool person... I just think she's bland. Also, this is all very heavy about personal preference. This type of stand up and her material just doesn't do it for me.
I love Wanda. I'm watching. I bet it'll be funnier than SNL, too. Heck, toothaches are frequently funnier than SNL, so it's not much of a bar, but I still expect great, funny things from her. #wandasykes
I was saying this to my mom the other day...of all the women who have had their own talk shows, Ellen, Oprah, Rosie, Chelsea Handler, and now Wanda (I'm sure there are more than this), a HUGE percentage are lesbians. I wonder if that's because talk shows have always been done by men and the more "masculine" a woman seems, the less risky she is for producers to back on this type of show? I can imagine some producers worrying that a non-lesbian host would gush about how hot all of her guests are and cry if they have a bad interview with a star or get star-struck. Maybe I'm really overthinking this and really underestimating Hollywood though. Anyone else have any thoughts? #wandasykes
@Sassy Pants: I think it's because those shows are usually watched pretty religiously by women. Especially ones like Ellen, Oprah, and Tyra, which are on in the daytime. Women have always, historically, been much more receptive to gay rights & accepting of gay people than straight men, or straight men and women once they're together. If not for the feminist movement, the gay rights movement would have had a much harder time, and vice versa; they've always been natural allies, and their struggles are so similar that even someone who doesn't think about those things can recognize the familiarity. Especially when that gay person is also a woman. And especially if that gay woman was known & loved by women (and gay men) before coming out of the closet. There's already trust and comfort there and a sense of friendship.
Then there's someone like Tyra, who is not gay, and is extremely feminine, but she has a huge gay following along with her straight female following and is extremely successful. The same goes for Oprah. It goes both ways.
I mean, RuPaul had a talk show in the 90's. I think that once you are able to all but completely remove the male/family demographic, television is allowed to be pretty open. And the success of those shows makes a good case for similar programming later in the day. Plus, if the ladies watch enough of it, they will begin to corrupt the mens and the babies.
But still, the women who make it have had to prove themselves for a long time. Rachel Maddow had a radio show, and was a guest commentator on MSNBC for forever, and it took her appearances becoming more and more frequent and progressively longer, and a few extremely successful guest hosting spots for Keith Olbermann before they realized that she really should have her own show. And it has exploded.
Katie Couric, Chelsea Handler, Ellen Degeneres, Christiane Amanpour, virtually every woman heading a show on television, gay or straight, had to pay their dues for a really long time to prove themselves. And because they have spent so long getting really good at what they do, and because there has been an automatic audience being groomed for them over the years, they're successful. Which paves the way for more progress. I think it all has to do with making the straight male demographic irrelevant, until they are the last ones to jump on the bandwagon. #wandasykes
I just feel like there's no hope for LL left. Even her parents have given up and are now publicly justifying their protective actions to remove responsibility for what she has/will become. #alecbaldwin
Man, who is Lindsay Lohan to me? No one, I don't care about Lindsay Lohan. She made some okay movies, but it's not like she was some undiscovered Meryl Streep or something.
AT THE SAME TIME: I would happily take thirty grand to kidnap Michael Lohan and drop him off in some tiny Nepalese village where there's no phone or internet, and promise the villagers ten thousand dollars if they never let him leave. #alecbaldwin
Dane Cook, was that a not-so-thinly veiled attack on David Cross? You will never be the comedian he is. Plus he's a board certified Analrapist. #alecbaldwin
@PrincessOfPower: Plus, its not like David Cross (and the like) were attacking him for "selling out" they were attacking him for sucking hard core and stealing material. Way to miss the point douche. #alecbaldwin
Dane Cook has so many mixed metaphors going on in his statement that I'm not entirely sure of his point. But as I recall, Mr.Cook had the singular distinction of being in a movie with Jessica Simpson, so maybe he shouldn't be pointing fingers about people doing crappy movies?
@FireflyinJuly: I was tempted to go for the passive-aggressive "I'm just SAYIN'"...but rejected the idea. If there was ever a statement that didn't need a qualifier, it's the one that I just made. #alecbaldwin
@Hooplehead: I think he was doing it because so many guys were mocking him and his crappy movies - only to come out and make crappy movies themselves, like David Cross. I have never much cared for Dane Cook as a comic, but I have to agree with him on this point. #alecbaldwin
@telecomic the thoughtful red panda: I get why he's saying it. I simply disagree that someone who's made a career of making any crap movie that came along has a leg to stand on when it comes to criticizing anyone else's choice of projects. He simply has no credibility in this department. Those who live in glass houses should not be so quick to throw stones, and Cook's critics at least have the distinction of having done work that didn't stink to high heaven at one point. Whereas I am at a loss to name a single Cook vehicle that didn't scream "waste of time" to me. #alecbaldwin
@Hooplehead: wait, wait! He was really good on that... um... he had that funny bit about... well... hey, do you remember when he spiked up his hair, and wore a wrist band on his forearm? That was cool. #alecbaldwin
Does anyone think Dane Cook really has the approval of Chris Rock? I'm calling balderdash on this one. Also, Mr. Cook would be delightful if he would hush and just be a place for me to sit down because he is quite physically attractive. When he hushes. #alecbaldwin
@LouisiAnna: I wait with baited breath for Chris Rock's reaction that he apparently approves of a talentless douchebag like Cook. It should be epic. Cannot back you on the last part of your statement, though. #alecbaldwin
As for Levi buying his baby son hockey gear: my son had his first baseball mitt by the time he was three weeks old, so I get it. It's just something dads (or grandfathers, in our case) do for their sons and grandsons. It's a guy thing.
He eventually grew into it and used it for years - it was even signed by David Wright. Yum, David Wright... #alecbaldwin
@gerbilsoutofexile...is cheap and easy: Sure, but why does a "guy thing" have to be about assuming the son will be into 'manly sports culture'? What if his son actually wants to be a ballet dancer, a pianist or a chess player for his leisure activity? There's always something a little too pushy about buying infants sports paraphernalia in my mind, not to mention the sexist aspects, since few men buy these things for their daughters (who very well might grow up to play hockey or soccer or baseball, etc.) #alecbaldwin

@Hippopotame wants a star, dagnabbit!!!: My husband comes from a long line of rabid Phillies fans; my father-in-law, 70 years old, still plays in a league. And Ian has had a talent for baseball since he was tiny. If he had not wanted to touch his glove (but he did and he's quite talented) and had other interests as well (he plays the trumpet and loves to read), that would have been fine.
Also, see boobookitteh above: her nieces were also included in their family's baseball tradition. #alecbaldwin
Wow! Coincidence! I removed Oprah's Karaoke Challenge from my TiVo - just because (it looked like a cheaper version of AI which I don't watch either). #alecbaldwin
I'm not the greatest commenter here (not even an account) but I do read regularly.
I don't know why you use "whatshername" and "whatshisname" but it's quite offensive in a feature in which Michael Lohan gets to keep his name while saying awful things about his daughter and the "whatshername" in question is news because her son has been hospitalized.
If, for whatever reason, that couple is so foul that they don't deserve a name (yet Lohan does?), why report on them at all? I don't understand.
@LombardCapaneus: I hate that. If it's supposed to be some kind of statement about Katie Price and Peter Andre not deserving press, why give them press? Why do regular headlines with people like Michael Lohan and Jon Gosselin? #alecbaldwin
