I think it's pretty hilarious--given a broad definition of the word "hilarious"--that this post is headed on my computer screen with an ad from Gawker Artists showing a Sims-like version of what is obviously supposed to be a white-trash woman with a black eye.

I just can't get misty-eyed or happy about these photos. Because what I learned this election cycle is that if a woman candidate gets "too close," she will be demeaned and demonized and be subject to viciously misogynistic treatment both in the media and, sadly, in the feminist community as well. We waited 24 years for a woman candidate after Geraldine Ferraro ran on the Democratic ticket, and now that we have a woman candidate on the Republican ticket, if I recall correctly it took all of a week before the eruption of a festival of panty-sniffing (including on this very site) questioning whether she was "really" the mother of her baby, and dragging her teenage daughter's name through the mud to boot. But that was all okay, because Hillary Clinton was not perfect and therefore a Bad Woman, and Sarah Palin is against abortion rights and therefore a Bad Woman. And whichever woman comes next (whenever that may be), will be in for the exact same treatment if she is not a perfect candidate and then we can all say again, "I'd love to vote for a woman for president -- just not That Woman."

So yeah, I am not excited or misty-eyed. What did I learn in this election? That politics, at least at the tippy-top, is still a "no girls allowed" zone. And that it would not be surprising at all if we go another 24 years before another woman runs.

Is it off-topic to share that my sister-in-law was on the fence and I just pushed her off and into ObamaLand?! I sent her a waaaayyyy long, super-linky email (including some links from Jezebel, so thanks to all of you!) and she just called tell me that she's made up her mind and is forwarding my massive missive to all of her friends who are also undecided!

That, and this post, have my weekend complete.

my great grandmother worked hard for the suffrage movement. i have made it a priority to vote in every election since i became eligible. to do anything less would be to dishonor what she and others went through to give us the right.

I wish there were some pictures of women supporting McCain up there. I may not agree with his choices on (what I consider to be) women's issues, but there are plenty of women who are going to vote Republican.

It's really easy to say they're gender traitors or some such, but it's wrong. A picture of one of the women at the Republican convention would be nice. They're exercising their franchise as much as the Obama mamas.

@gobblegirl: You know, that's a very fair point. And I had that in mind when I was compiling this, but many of the McCain pictures I came across had supporters with fairly inflammatory signs that I was afraid would set off a discussion that would take away from the point of this post.

If I can find a picture, I'll try to put it up.
