    OR the Gospels, which were written 100 years after the birth of Jesus and not by anyone with a first-hand knowledge of the events, might have gotten a few facts wrong here and there in an effort to interpret the life of Jesus in a way that was theologically pleasing to the authors.


    You know, whichever is more plausible.

    Whoever she was, from an atheist's perspective (& thus not down with the whole Immaculate Conception bit), she was brilliant. An unwed pregnant woman in those times was not in a good situation (as my grandma liked to say, "Girls in occupied countries often get into trouble"), and she managed to explain herself in the most far-out, astonishing way possible and boy, was she believed. Props.

    @Your Screenplay Sucks: Not to rain on your particular parade, but you opened the door to another popular misconception.


    "Immaculate Conception" has NOTHING to do with the conception of Jesus. It actually refers to Mary being the only human being conceived without the stain of Original Sin.


    Fact-finding in religious fables seems trite, I know, but that is actually the fable.

    @Your Screenplay Sucks: From one atheist to another, I think it's helpful to know the "facts" that we reject. Let's just be clear that the Immaculate Conception does not actually refer to the conception of Christ. It actually refers to Mary's conception. She was born without "original sin." You know, because she had to be pure, perfect vessel to hold the Baby Jesus.

    @theysaidwhat: Well, technically the Immaculate Conception has a lot to do with the conception of Jesus. It's true that it wasn't Jesus' conception, but the only reason that Mary was conceived immaculately was so that she could conceive Jesus.


    It's not like these are purely unrelated miracles.
