I have that, although it's less...violent then people with parasomnia don't experience the paralysis that happens when most people sleep. I've punched the wall near my bed a few times, thrown pillows I thought were ninja throwing knives, and put on my glasses. It's very weird especially times when I've reached out for something in my sleep and bumped into the wall or my hand has asleep because it's tucked under my pillow so in my dream it's useless for anything.

I woke up in the middle of one night to find my boyfriend's elbow crushing my windpipe. Now, I weigh 99 pounds and he's six feet tall, so it is NO EASY TASK to get him off of me. I was seriously unable to breathe as I struggled to get him off, at which point he started LAUGHING. I was freaking the fuck out, and finally managed to pull away and gasp in some air. I lay there sweating and insane for a few moments and then woke him up. "Derek, you just tried to STRANGLE ME," I said, on the verge of tears. He was like "WHAT?! I was having a dream where I was wrestling with Greg."

This was two years ago, and if I ever bring it up now he starts laughing again. But guys, seriously, I feared for my life in those moments, that I would die under my boyfriend's elbow in the middle of the night with no way to call for help. SCARY SHIT!

My dad has this - Night Terrors - he looks like he's awake but he can't see anything. He's gone around our house banging on the walls (to kill giant spiders) he's covered my mom in blankets (because she/ the house was on fire) and once he even tried to grab my little sister out of her bed because he thought she was suffocating to to the fact that there was no oxygen in her bedroom. He never made it to her bed though b/c every time he ran into her room he collapsed on the ground because he couldn't breathe... These types of problems are very real, and the people that have them are totally absorbed into their dreams. We have to talk to my dad as though we're in the dream with him in order to get him to go back to bed - you can't just say "yo dad - wake up!" It's pretty crazy! It's gotten better in recent years but when I was little he had these dreams all the time.

I once punched my ex boyfriend smack in the middle of the face while asleep, as he tried to snuggle. The cause of that was a dream I was having, about him burning me with live power lines. He found it very funny in the morning.

I didn't know that was a disorder! I kick and talk in my sleep. And a few nights ago I punched him right in the stomach. He says my form was perfect--I've been taking boxing lessons--but I guess it didn't hurt or anything. He thinks it was hilarious.

It is a miracle I haven't kicked the boyfriend yet(we don't live together, though). When I was small and my brother and I had to share a bed on family vacation, I literally kicked him in the face. We were lying the same way, so my parents were really unsure how it happened. I flail and kick, and steal the blankets. I also have conversations in my sleep.

The only sleep disorder I have been diagnosed with over the years is insomnia, though.

Can I do this to my tossing and turning crazy redhead bedhog husband?

I have had to physically roll him over so I can room in the bed. You try rolling over the dead weight of a giant leprechaun.

actually parasomnia is a blanket term for a number of sleep disorders. nightmares, sleep walking, bed-wetting, and other common sleep issues fall under it. Parasomnias themselves are not rare, although this guy's manifestation of it might be.

I'm definitely the worse sleeping partner. BF and I have a king-bed and I still nearly managed to knock his front teeth out with my elbow the other night. I still don't know how he didn't break up with me the first year when we shared his single bed on the floor of his college apartment.

Also, I wish I could EVER sleep like the couple pictured in the image above. Look how sweet and cuddly and airy-yet-warm and perfectly meshed they are. It looks so restful and comforting.

Whenever I try to snuggle up to someone like that, there is snoring, drooling, overheating, sweating, flailing, and blanket-stealing involved. NO ONE actually sleeps like that. NO ONE.

that's what i thought too, and how horrible this really might be for the couple in the article. suppose they've been cuddelbugs for the last 40 years or so and now all of a sudden they can't sleep together anymore? can't they medicate the man somehow? of course i didn't read the actual article...

my partner and i are cuddlebugs in bed and i can't really sleep if he's not in bed with me... i keep waking up. he's the same way.

@tscheese: My husband and I come close. I have to be touching at least some part of his body and he can no longer get to sleep without his hand clutching my hair. Granted, we don't wake up cuddling, but we go to sleep cuddling then shift in the night.

Ahhhhhh, I was diagnosed with that in high school. Except no violence for me, but I'd wander around at sleepovers waking people's parents up and telling them Buddha was coming or dumping out the contents of cereal boxes. I was a popular kid to have over. Luckily, it only lasted about a year and a half.

@the.bleach: Oh my! My sister had this as a little girl. She would walk into my parents room, weep about something, stop, then turn around and get back in bed. She also did this every time I babysat. My favorite she did was walk over to me and say "I'm very mad at Chris*." "Why Grace?" "He has a very strange cookie." *pause. Walked back to bed.*

The husband punched me in his sleep a couple of times in the early days of sharing a bed. I always blamed it on a slightly paranoid disposition ("the ninjas are out to get me" mindset) and his elite martial arts training ("the ninjas can't get me if I get them first" mindset).

He has settled down. Now he just runs marathons or has the occasional dream disco.

My mom was taking some kind of medication once (I think it was some kind of steroid for her asthma) and it gave her crazy dreams and, apparently, super human strength. My dad said he woke up in the middle of the night, and my mom was screaming, standing over him holding a solid wooden rocking chair over her head that she was apparently ready to hit him with. She said the dream was about aliens.

I did this for the first time two nights ago. I had a nightmare in which I was trying to get up off the floor to get away from snakes, and my husband's leg just happened to touch mine. I kicked him really hard, with both legs. I don't know who was more surprised.
