They're crinolines, not petticoats. They wore them under those full party skirts and scotty dog skirts in the 60s to make them poof out.
(eta: it crops the picture? Sorry. I didn't know it did that and I don't know how to edit the url)

Does anyone remember the movie Polly? A remake of Pollyanna with Rudy and Claire Huxtable starring? Most of her dresses had crinoline/ petticoat skirts and I was in LOVE with it. I couldn't wait to grow up and be allowed to dress that way.
Last: I like Sarah Vaughn, but I LOVE Dinah. LOVE.

it kind of bridges the gap for someone [like me] who is crazy into vintage fashion and aesthetics, but, is only even bombarded with images of people of the caucasian persuasion.

So much falls to the wayside and what remains is a telling of our sorrows and strife instead of the full picture.
The family album that sits in my mother's house dates back to the 1800's and in it, I see the beauty perseverance and strength of my ancestors.
Most importantly, I see that we existed in ways contrary to the public record.
Kudos to AntiSocialSocialite for putting this together.

I love Love LOVE Mad Men (dedicated a post to Sheila), but boy are they selective about what history they choose to include!
And about that album you have. If you're comfortable with it, I'd love to feature some of your photos on my blog.

I'm totally comfortable, but I've been trying to convince my mom to let me scan photos and make a digital archive for years now. I'm hoping I don't have to wait until I inherit it.

Right? I hate it when people just dismiss it with the "well, it was reflective of the times" argument.
The sixties had a few people in high society outed for passing for white if I'm not mistaken. How hard would it be to add a character like that to the agency? How interesting would that be?
I've said this before, but there were entertainers and people definetely intersected up North in ways that didn't happen down South. Sure, there were lines drawn ,but intersections happened. I think it's revisionist for them to infer otherwise.

@AndPreciousLittleofThat: Posting a vintage fashion pic of my dad's cousin, Harlean Harris, who incidentally dated Sam Cooke.

And not to be a spoiler, but from the biography of Sam I'm currently reading, he dated most of the female populations of Harlem, the south side of Chicago, and LA. ;) Thanks!

AND she was apparently the reason why Jackie Wilson got shot!!
According to pg. 355 in "Dream Boogie," a bio of Sam I'm reading, Jackie Wilson was shot on the day after Valentine's Day 1951 by a "love-crazed fan" as the papers called her. Apparently he was escorting Ms. Harris, a teenage model "with the amazing hair style" into his apartment, when the other woman came up and tried to shoot HER. She missed and hit Jackie instead.
Damn. Your dad's cousin was a true badass!!
