Actually from a historical perspective, this is fascinating. Consider the date: 1947. All the boys had come home from the front to find that while they were off being heroes, their womenfolk had kept their homes, taken care of their kids AND at the same time ably taken over all the factory jobs and other work the menz weren't around to do. The Establishment was flipping its collective shit about how it could most effectively get the ladies to sit down, shut up and go back to the kitchen. Hence such cultural artifacts as this rag of a magazine, its contents alternating between Caitlin Flanaganesque, underminer-y screeds and flat-out misogyny.
Of course what our excuse is for the same things 62 years later, I'm not really sure ...
Bah wait. How did I miss this? The subhead: "A shocking indictment by a noted woman physician"
Methinks 1) she's unhappy, and projecting, 2) she will cut any bitches who are threatening to be in her field as well, so she'll shame them back home, 3) since she can't tell that women experience PAIN DURING CHILDBIRTH, she must not be all that knowledgable of a physician.
i can't get over the hypocrisy of this "noted woman physician" nor the coronet for assuming all women would be stupid enough to not notice this!
so what's this "noted woman physician" saying? that she's not really that much into her career? great! that's just what i want~~ a physician caring for me who doesn't really give a shit about her career.
"The pet fantasy of the feminists is that childbirth is a period of horrible agony to which women must submit while their carefree husbands pass out cigars. Actually, the entire process is as natural as breathing. The healthy, normal young woman feels little pain, even without anesthesia, unless she has had her wits scared out of her by the warnings of emotionally unstable female acquaintances."
@Anne is Spiderman: I want to use that passage in a logic class. "Natural" and "not painful" do not necessarily cotravel. And appealing to the "normal young woman" is a classic "no true Scotsman". I swear, misogynistic screeds are hands-down the easiest place to find logical fallacies.
@Eleanor Savage (Shannon): I just want to know how I can be MORE childless. What does that even mean? I didn't realize that child-less-ness had a continuum, but if I can more childless than I am now? I want in.
Yeah, whatever, Voice. Aren't you the same Voice that let Nat Hentoff go at the end of last year/beginning of this one as a New Years' gift to all of us?

Because we set up the whole system while men just stood by whistling and glancing about.
I'm sure the entire article is a giant fail, but this is one of the biggest headline failures I've ever seen.
