My ex-husband loved long hair, and he insisted that I keep my hair long for him.
When I left him, one of the first things I did was chop it off into a swingy chin-length bob. I have yet to grow it out. It's so much easier, not just for the purposes of care, but also when it comes to running and the like. Plus, I just look more polished and professional. It was absolutely liberating.
Fortunately my current Mr. loves my hair no matter what it looks like. The mark of a good man! #vidalsassoon
A few years ago, when I still wore a graduated bob, I had a student stylist at the Aveda Institute who was a genius with the technical cuts. On our last appointment together she said "I've got something really great in mind" and gave me a perfect Sassoon bob. One of the instructors, the one who was a real stickler for perfection in cuts, caught sight of my profile and pronounced "Oh my god it's Nancy Kwan!" (I wish!)
Best haircut I've ever had. #vidalsassoon
@kerry: I like my long hair, but if the Sassoon bob even made me even slightly ressemble Nancy Kwan, I'd lop them off in a second. Gorgeous, though probably a big hassle for those of us with wavy hair. #vidalsassoon
@bowleserised: I have wavy/curly hair, too, so for the 3 or so years I wore a bob I blow-dried and flatironed my hair every morning. Luckily, my hair tends to hold a style, so I didn't have to worry too much about it curling back up over the course of the day. #vidalsassoon
ive only had hair that reached my shoulders once since i was 13 and at that time it manic-panic bright red. i cycle from a pixie to a bob every couple of years, and whenever i get bobbish, i think about growing it long but it doesnt FEEL like me. i feel inauthentic, like im trying too hard to be a woman and not being myself.
at the moment my hair is asymmetrically cut. cropped close on the left and chin length on the right (but with layers, not like an even bob) and doing a kind of fashion-mullet in the back. i love it. its a great compromise. #vidalsassoon
I have a buzz cut, and a women once said to me, "Wow, I've always wanted to do my hair like that, but my husband won't let me. His first wife ran off with another woman." And if she hadn't been a customer I would have said, "Yes, I can see why she would."
I dwell in the limbo of straight, shoulder length-ish hair. No snappy geometric short cut or pixie - my face is too round. No long, lush waves - impossible without sleeping every night on wet hair and rag rollers. As a result, I have had basically the same below-the-chin but above-the-shoulders bob since 1994. Boring, but it's healthy and unprocessed, and looks professional and neat. I am still jealous of people who can pull off either minimalist or lush hairstyles. #vidalsassoon
@Flackette Goes Retro: I have a round face as well and used to look dynamite with short hair. The key is to find a hairdresser you really trust and then give them as few limitations as possible.
I used to go in and say, " I don't like my chin, I don't want to look like there is a ball or triangle on my neck, now.....GO!" I got the most amazing hair cuts that way. #vidalsassoon
We need some more of this. I'm so sick of everyone, in Hollywood in particular, having the same damn hair! Try new things! See what works for you! It's like everyone read an article that guys like long wavy hair and they're afraid to try anything else, lest they never have sex again!
This month, I'm rocking an auburn angled bob with long blunt bangs...and I'm loving it! #vidalsassoon
I wore my hair in a pixie from, oh, 13 to 26 or so, when I moved to New York and my new stylist explained to me that my kind of curl made a pixie the opposite of the low maintenance it was supposed to be. Grew it out, and while he didn't really know what to do with it, my new one does, and I spend approximately five minutes on my thick, shoulder length curls in the morning.
The pixie? 30 minutes taming my hair into something that didn't resemble Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop. #vidalsassoon
@Ratinski: Hope this isn't thread jacking -- but please tell me your secret! I had short hair from about age 9-26 and have grown it out to long in the past few years, but it is thick and curly and I don't know how to handle it. I'm very close to chopping it off again.
@Ratinski: Oh, exactly. I didn't even know I had curly hair until I grew it out. Suddenly, what was a 30-minute to hour-long fight with "unmanageable" hair became a three-minute towel & gel, with the results being long, unfrizzy ringlets.
@pele tiger: Throw out your shampoo. I only shampoo my hair once every several weeks. All I do in the shower is condition (I use Garnier Fructis Melting Sleek & Shine Conditioner) and then comb through it while standing under the shower. Afterwards I put in some curl cream (Garnier again) and it's good to go!
Finding a good stylist is key, though. Check out NaturallyCurly.com for recs.
@emistijl: I think so, although I didn't register that when I first watch. I just remember one of the (many) times I overslept being awakened by a friend who immediately squealed YOU HAVE SPIKE HAIR before going "Hurry up, or we'll be late for the con."
@johannebertha: I knew mine was wavy - couldn't miss that - but when I grew it out I suddenly had these ringlets. No idea where they came from, no one else has hair this curly. #vidalsassoon
I think Pixie cuts are really cute.I could never pull it off though, I look best with longer hair I think. Oh and when I think of vidal sassoon all I can think of are the Namie Amuro commericals #vidalsassoon
I've got very short hair, pixieish, and it's a cut I always get when I'm really stressed and don't want to think about my hair anymore. I don't even care if it's flattering, I just don't want to deal with it.
Plus, my hair is gray, so the texture can be hard to manage. I haven't had it long in years because it looks terrible just hanging there (very fine) and it's wavy, so it can never make up it's mind.
Most of the time I like short cuts anyway, but probably a little longer than I have now. And as long as I get the back trimmed regularly, growing it out isn't that bad, either. I never go any longer than chin length anyway. #vidalsassoon
I've had a pixie cut for years, and people seem to be unnerved by it for some reason. Several times a month I have women come up to me and tell me they would BUT they'd cry and their husbands/boyfriends would hate them for it. Which saddens me, because all of my exes have loved my hair.
I have had a lot of men say things like,
"You know, short hair usually looks bad on girls, but you pull it off."
"You're cute. I mean... the hair is too short, but you're still cute."
@myevilempire: I'm sure it looks amazing and that you have a wonderfully shaped head, which I think you need to pull it. My hair is long mostly because I'm too lazy and cheap to get it cut on a regular basis, which I think a short cut demands. #vidalsassoon
@hfree: It does require regular cutting, yeah... luckily I've found a great, super cheap local salon that I go to (12 effing dollars!). It does get annoying going over there so much, but as long as my morning hair routine takes two minutes at the most, I'll stay too lazy to grow it out. #vidalsassoon
I have long curly hair, and i've never felt MORE liberated. It probably has to do with the "no poo" routine I started last year - I'm spending so much less money on hair products AND it takes me maybe 5 minutes to style my hair in the morning.
(Of course, I take a 20 minute cat nap after my shower in the morning to give the curls some time to dry so I'm not going to work looking like a drowned rat, but my hair is long and OH SO LOW maintenance.)
If you have frizzy hair, I do not have enough good things to say about the "no poo" method. My hair has never looked better AND I'm saving money. Liberate yourselves from the products, ladies! It's amazing on the other side! #vidalsassoon
@zombies.like.lattés.too: My hair just doesn't dry, like, ever if it's long. It's really thick but also really fine (each strand is fine, but there's a lot of 'em) with a little bit of a wave if it gets long. It takes my hair a solid 3 hours (at least!) to air dry and a combination of me sucking at using a blow dryer and the weight of it makes it nearly impossible to blow dry in less than a half hour. The combination fineness, thickness and wave makes any kind of style beyond "poofy" absolutely a pipe dream -- it won't hold a curl or stay straight.
Me and my pixie cut are quite liberated now. :) #vidalsassoon
@zombies.like.lattés.too: Same. Liberated from harsh shampoos through the miracle of Noo-Poo! My hair has never been this healthy. Plus, I eliminated heat styling with a dryer. It feels so good to be able to wear my hair natural.
An architectural style like that would have been awful hair repression for me, plus a whole lot of tears. Never could have happened with my hair texture. #vidalsassoon
@Zombie Ms. Skittles & @zombies.like.lattés.too: I was SO hoping somebody who has curly hair would say something about their short cut. I have very out-of-control "mixed girl" hair (very thick, wavy at the roots and goes into a spiral curl at the ends) and am desperate to cut it - but I am so afraid I'm going to look ridiculous.
I don't like taking a lot of time or spending a lot of money on my hair. I figure if it's short, I am more likely to straighten it on days I feel like it (b/c it won't take 45-55 minutes) and if I feel like wash 'n go, I can do that too. Is this possible or am I kidding myself? #vidalsassoon
@shorty63136: Hmmm...it sounds like your hair is weighing itself down and that's why it's wavy at the roots. If you went short, you'd probably end up with hair that's a lot curlier up top than you have now, so you'd want to make sure you have a good base cut for curls or it might just poof out.
I'd talk to your stylist before making any big decisions. #vidalsassoon
Last month when I went to get my shoulder length hair chopped into a pixie, the stylist looked at me in the mirror and went, "you're not going to cry on me, are you?"
I'd like to thank Mr. Sassoon for the style, anyway. :) #vidalsassoon
