The other thing about this is, some of the attackers were 18. Do you charge the 18-year-olds as adults and those under 18 as juveniles? If so, is that unfair to the 18-year-old? Especially since it seems that the 18-year-old didn't actually do the beating, but just kept watch.

And didn't we have an article on here the other day about how some bullies just enjoy being mean and hurting others?

What part of our society is to blame? I seem to be meeting more and more young girls that think it's cool to be a "thugette." In their minds it's a new form of feminism. If the men can do it so can we. If the women in the bikinis mud wrestling in the videos can do it & look hot so can I. My sister works for the dept. of juvenile justice in my state (deep south) and she is more afraid of what the girls are capable of than the boys. Her first month on the job she was almost killed by a 12 year old girl that tried to choke her to death because she didn't want to hear what my sister was saying.

The only time I've seen anything similar was when my step-cousin almost beat up my stepmother. However, when he was a little kid he was severely abused in a drug-riddled environment and suffered sexual trauma, which explains part of the crazy.

@marypoppinpills: At my school the worst fights were always the ones between girls. The guys it was just fists, but the girls brought in bricks, stomped on people's heads, it was nasty stuff. Sadly, I went to one of the better schools in my city and this was only a couple years ago.

@Brigit: Well thank Jesus self defense classes were offered & paid for by the state before she ever started the job so she was prepared for this kind of behavior.

On another note, I recently befriended & promptly defriended a girl, 21, after we decided to go out for drinks. First time ever hanging out, everything going well, until she sees her ex sitting at the bar next to a girl...just sitting...and proceeds to pick up a table and chucks it at the girl, misses, and starts flinging anything she can find at the poor girl. Next day I get a phone call apologizing for her ruining my buzz??? Not a word about the spastic attack on a stranger....

As an attorney who does a lot of criminal defense, I believe that trying these kids as adults is not a good thing. Yes, what these girls did was terrible. Yes, they deserve to be punished to the fullest extent the juvenile system will allow. BUT, if they are not 18, they are not 18. You can't justify such rules for cases that garner a lot of public attention and not expect it to produce undesirable results in other instances. It will. Children are NOT adults and should not ever be treated as such. Snap judgment comes easy in cases like this one, but always remember that the legal system is like a house of cards. Everything you do affects the whole establishment.

@BeenieWeenie: I think age limits for certain things are no longer relevant. I think if you have the mental capacity to think up, plan, and execute a heinous crime, then you need to pay the price for the premeditation, age notwithstanding. I think it's foolish to believe, in this day and age of instant access to information and educational levels for the general populace that far exceed those of 200 or more years ago, that a 15-year-old can claim that age is a good reason they should not have to be punished for committing a heinous act.

@NefariousNewt, Serving at the Pleasure of the President-Elect: @Gael: I think what he/she is saying is that this kind of thing has a ripple effect into the rest of the legal system. Even if these girls should be tried as adults, what about all the 15-year-olds who are tried that way who really shouldn't be? You're right; putting a number on this kind of thing isn't wise or really even possible. But what do we do about the kids who are being punished too severely at a judge's discretion?

There should be no pat answers, no pat judgments, and frankly, no pat limitations. If you say "we shouldn't try a 15-year-old as an adult," you take away the power of the courts to do that when it is quite clear from the evidence that there was a level of premeditation that goes beyond simple child-like thinking. If you let the courts decide, if you let them actually use their better judgment, then a 15-year-old who commits any crime stands a better chance of receiving just treatment.

@NefariousNewt, Serving at the Pleasure of the President-Ele...: I guess my worry is that the court's judgment isn't always better judgment. I think we all agree that there are serious problems in the criminal justice system, mostly based on race, and so I worry that those get in the way of seeing kids who are indeed still kids as kids. We just don't have impartial judges, you know? I dunno what the answer to fix this particular problem is, but the juvenile justice system needs to be overhauled just like the one for adults does.

Girls making videos and putting them on YouTube is a gross new thing. You can tell our society is going to crap when there are supposedly well raised middle class kids making vicious videos for entertainment. It just makes me so sad. Serious lapse in parenting or nuts children? Or both?

I just can't imagine what I'd do if my kid did something like this. My first impulse now would be to hire his victim an excellent attorney. The girls who did this repulse me, and if their parents were to defend them, that would repulse me too. How can you know your kid did this and not wonder where you went wrong as a parent? It's all I can think of. That poor girl. I just don't know what could rehabilitate someone who would plan and execute that kind of beating, and then videotape it. I don't give a shit about herd mentality. There are some things that a person should have learned before age fifteen.

Honestly, I want to smack the girl who gotten beaten up's parents. They rubbed me the wrong way. There was some issue at home that their daughter had to live somewhere else, but having so much care for their daughter after she got beaten up. Wanting to hug the girls that beat their daughter up? I'm all for compassion, but that made me confused.

@jejune768: I agree, I found them both off-putting. What's with the dad saying he saw a young girl laying on the floor beaten but left the room because he didn't realize it was his daughter? @FreudRage: The parents struck me as covering their asses a bit too. Unless I misunderstood what the Dad was saying though, he didn't find her laying on the ground. He was called to the hospital and when he entered the room he didn't recognize the girl in the bed as his daughter. I think he was saying he peeked in and thought thought he had the wrong room so he headed back out.

Not guilty: ha! I have a feeling I am going to be just tickled pink when I hear the actual defense. I have a feeling it will be as ridiculous as anything I see on Law and Order SVU, like that PMS made them do it.

Violent mean girls like this rarely get any better in life. Whether juvie or prison, they need some sort of correctional facility.
