Of course, she was the only one out of the five that had a decent answer, though I still think Dominican Republic was ROBBED!
Also, I'm never watching this pageant again because it was THE worst pageant I've ever watched from Miss Universe. And I must add that a lot of the Top 15 semifinalists were HAND-PICKED by Donald Trump himself, and there's photo evidence of him having the girls line up in a row, while he has a notepad and a pen in his hands, like he was only picking the hot girls.
And I'm PEEVED that my girls Tatum from South Africa, Ingibjorg from Iceland, Chloe from France and Kristen from USA were so underscored during the contest. They deserved MUCH higher scores than they got!
But congratulations to Stefania for making history and winning Miss Universe!
I've got to start wagering on this stuff... I only saw the first 5 minutes and I called her as the winner. She seemed to be the only one up there with a personality.
I, for one, am happy Venezuela won. Trust me, there isn't much good news out there for my peeps. Yes, it's everything you guys say; superficial, sexist, etc. Aside from the orchestra system and some baseball players, beauty queens we got and I bet you people back home are happy she won.
As for her answer she said "people have to realize there are no barriers between us," which for an 18 year old and with 30 seconds, is not too shabby. Women do receive competive salaries compared to their male counterparts in Venezuela, at least in the oil industry.
This is to say, I am celebrating this wee little victory, insignificant if you insist, for my country. Now if we ever qualify for a World Cup...
I'm not justifying what she said, as I don't agree with it either, but maybe her comment stems from her culture? I say this as a fellow latina, and it's been my experience that feminism isn't always a given for hispanic women. So while we know that what she said isn't true, to her it might seem that the level we're at is good enough, or as good as it's going to get.
When men are paraded around in the same manner treated like pieces of meat and judged upon whether they are "pretty" and graceful, then I'd say we are at the same level.
She's right though. I mean... we have the right to be harassed in the WORK PLACE, now. In times past, women could only be belittled at home and on the street. We also have earning power in our flat tummies and high cheek bones so we don't need to be smart like men do... It's actually harder to be a man! Equality is so great!
@sportz.star: I'm really excited to be able to walk from the train station to my house alone at night and not worry about being raped by a man! This "equality" thing is going to be awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not to denigrate Ms. Fernandez's accomplishment, but I think if she took a good, hard look around, she'd realize that while women are better off, they are not at the point of equality with men, yet. Especially when they are still participating in "beauty" pageants.
