I have $50 shoes made of leather that have lasted for 10+ years. How many season will those plastic, tape and canvas shoes last? Can you recycle them or do they just disintegrate over time?

@MakeFetch: I am a vegetarian, and I try to do a combination. Shoes I know I will wear a LOT, like loafers or basic black pumps, I will buy leather, maybe a pair a year. Everything else is from payless or target, things that are semi-trendy that I would have gotten sick of anyway.

i wear vegan shoes that i buy at payless. animals aren't harmed, and neither is my wallet.

i love to watch celebrities think that the insane profit margin on health food can be applied to every other product available for sale...and then watch those celebrities products fail.

$200 plastic shoes? Um, no thanks. Most shoes in a season have vaguely the same aesthetic about them- inspired by some truly original idea and/or fashion revival thought up a year ago by an independent label or big fashion house and then brought to the mass market. So when you want pleather gladiator sandals or PVC square-toed MaryJane's when everyone else is selling them you might as well get them at Payless for $25. Truly artful, orginal shoes cost way more than $200 anyway, and are reserved for truly rich, designy, insidery people

Why vegan and not just animal-friendly shoes? No dairy or eggs involved in the process? Does anyone wear egg-and-cheese apparel, anyways? Also, she could have saved herself the trouble of her failed consumerist approach to veganism and just bought herself some animal-friendly shoes and a zoo with the leftover money.

Confession: Like most boutiques around, my store buys cheap ass PVC purses from Korean stores for 10 bucks and marks them up to 100 (which, by the way, so, so weird to have people freak out about what a deal they are. Clearly they've never been to H&M). When they ask what they're made of, I say "vegan leather." Yup. It totally works, too.

@Ulookinatmyjunk!?!: Interesting. It reminds me of an ad or picture one of my womens' studies professors used to talk about where a woman is strapped to the front of a Jeep like a deer. I forget exactly what it was but that was her basic point as well, we're regarded more as animals or property than humans.

Anyone know what materials were used for these shoes and how the materials were sourced? I am curious if the man-made materials were environmentally friendly.

@Archetype: There was a vegan gal on the "What Not To Wear" marathon over Turkey Day who would only look at non-meat-based shoes (some people are so picky...) She seemed to be dealing mostly with plastic, cloth and eco-friendly faux materials..

@Shamrockette: Anything to promote a culture of sustainable goods is helpful. I'd rather people invest in 200 dollar shoes, instead of cheap shoes that will get thrown out in a few months. Cheap shoes are mostly made of textiles that need a huge amount of water to be created and contribute to our water deficit.
