Also: a snub nose=snooty. Hooded eyelids=seductive and/or 'dopey'. Small eyes=distrustful. I may have looked like an Aryan poster child when I was little, but only until you dissected my face and realised I had (and still have!) all of these. Thanks for the genetics, mum and dad!

My grandmother told me that her da used to say that the 'family nose' was a 'Roman' nose. Apparently she used to think that it meant something nice and austere, etc... Until he clarified that it was a 'Roman nose' cos it was 'roamin' all over [her] face.' Ha, crushed.

My nose is small-ish and kinda snub, but also pointy. I had never thought much about it until a boy in my class in third form suddenly exclaimed 'gosh your nose is pointy, Vivien! It's like a witch's nose!' Now? I hide it every chance i get...

That is a weird goddamn book.

I especially love the "Deceitful head". And that narrowheaded bird looks pretty dangerous to me.

I think Disney just makes the villains as wacky looking as possible without considering race.

@Prince Naveen is black. He's just using Murray's.: I find it odd that "wacky looking" automatically means a large, hooked nose and squinty eyes. And that it coincides so well with commonly held xenophobic stereotypes that have been around for a very long time.

Doesn't baby-faced killer just mean too young to shave?

To me, the most fascinating examples of "scientific racism" are the mid-19th century British cartoons comparing the savage features of Africans and Irishmen to the civilized features of the English. Because when I think of two groups that look alike, I totally think of the Irish and Africans (whose tribe/country is never specified).

I prefer this take on things, from Roald Dahl: "A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely."

Facial reading, people do it whether or not they have a manual. Hence all of the plastic surgery. Its why women get their lips injected, because people think fuller lips send out a more "sensual" message. And so many women want small ski-slope noses and stronger facial symmetry. As if a face could map out the complexities of the nature of an individual. Give me the so-called "witchy" face, anyday. I love my Roman nose. :)

Phhttt! Why are you trying to extrapolate this fine and surely accurate information, which is clearly only about teh mens, to features of teh wimmens? Our character is defined by our submissive nature and baby making ability. We can't be reduced to physical stereotypes!

Wow. According to this book, half of the elderly people I encounter cannot be trusted. With age, noses continue to elongate, eyelids begin to droop, hairlines recede and dentures get lost. Good to know!

OMG we totally studied this type of "anthropology", as it were called back then, in my Diversity and Concepts of Race class. By the end of the semester, my professor had shot down every. single. concept about race based on physical appearance that we had when we came into the class (we took a pre-class evaluation of perception and a post-class evaluation).

We even got to study human remains, used the above type of "science" in order to determine the race of the deceased person based on their bones. WRONG. EVERY. TIME.

Loved that class. It's why I would always put "race" in quotation marks - but I got tired of going into the abyss that included explaining why "race" doesn't actually exist and why I put it in quote marks as a result.
