@chelseadaggers: Terms such as bi-racial and mixed race always grate with me too. Just because a person appears to be of white heritage does not mean that they are not mixed race as has been conclusively proved thanks to DNA testing. A Channel4 documentary was able to show that a number of white people, who banged on about their supposed racial purity, actually had relatively recent non-white ancestors. One woman threatened to sue when it turned out she had recent Romany blood running through her veins.
@chelseadaggers: Look, Gisele and Adirana Lima still promote a very specific, very dominant cultured, very white, beauty look. Pointing out that the models who are being paid the big bucks are still in a very narrow spectrum of colour and features is pretty reasonable.
Wait- is she asserting that this is "patriarchal and heteronormative" or is she just quoting someone who said it?
I think there's a weird tension, in American discussions of the middle east, between feminism and Islamophobia. I'm glad to hear somebody talking about it-- I came up with this while writing a research paper last semester and have kept my eyes open for further reading ever since.
@HannahBethD: That's a really broad assumption you're making. Not everyone thinks that. I'm just not really sure what you mean. I think I maybe taking this a little too hard because I'm Muslim...
@sarah0220: I got the gist from the quoted material that the writer (not Sadie) thought all the women were buying lingerie for patriarchal reasons.
I don't liek the assumption that all Muslim women (and not everyone makes this assumption, but it seems to be the overarching theme of almost every story I read about Muslim women) that every Muslim marriage is all horrible patriarchal cruelty all the time.
I'm not saying I think that. I;m sorry if I wasn't clear.
@HannahBethD: I get what you're saying, and I completely agree.
I think, though, that most of these assumptions about Muslims, not even just about marriage but about anything, come from major misunderstandings that exist about Islam and the Middle East and Muslim culture.
@HannahBethD: Gotchya. I just wasn't sure what point you were trying to make but I understand now. Thanks for clarifying :)
Also, I hope I didn't come off brash, it was one of those comments where you write exactly what you're thinking at that exact second and hit submit before you can smooth the edges.
There's a danger to Westernizing too much of the Middle East, but if "sexy" turns into "confident" like we've seen over here, I can't imagine that wouldn't be a bad thing.
The patriarchy is sickening. I say that as a dude.

Can't we get past even thinking in race. Adirana Lima and Gisele are Brazilian, what race is a Brazilian?

Perhaps some Muslim men really do love their wives? Perhaps not every Muslim is an extremist?
