Me and my love of things mechanical, sports, drinking and longer ring finger than index finger (sign of higher testosterone exposure in the womb, suspected to increase traditionally "male" tendencies) are all offended by these fundie asshats.
I'll respect your culture if I'm ever there by covering my head, but ask me to give up my loves that I share with my guy friends is something I will not do.
@wednesdayam: Holy crap! I didn't know about the ring finger thing! Mine is longer than my index finger...and I'm left-handed (thought to be linked to over-exposure of testosterone in the womb as well).
But what is a man? Is it someone with a penis? Is it someone who likes women? Is it someone who considers himself a man? But then again, what I consider a man may be different from what you consider a man.
What is a manly woman anyway? As a kid, I liked playing with dolls (an my little ponies!), but I also liked running like a wild thing, climbing trees, rolling on the ground, etc. And I always considered myself a girl. Is this related to the post at all? I don't know! But who decides THIS is manly and THAT is womanly? Geez
I think my favorite thing about the notion that a so-called "manly woman" threatens "normal girls", is the insinuation that it's so enticing. Like, if girly-girls see these manly-women walking around, being all happy, they will be like "What, I don't have to wear make up? I AM FREE!"
I remember a few years back hearing Sam Seder talking about how the anti-gay evangelicals will argue that "Of course being with a man in enticing, but you have to listen to what God Wants!!!!" and I couldn't help but thinking...gee, if it's that enticing, then maybe you're ...gay?
@Dear Blond Diary: LOL. Exactly. If it threatens you that much, it is because you're dealing with your own demons and denying something you really want to do.
OK, I don't understand half of what is going on in that NO sign. Don't hold hands, I get that; also, don't wear shirts featuring no signs? No cleavage? No sneaking up behind women to grope them (thanks, UAE!), No smoking, No... women with hips? Capes? and then... no beer? or is that an overflowing garbage can?
The thing that weirds me out is I thought you could drink and smoke openly in Dubai. Isn't it kind of a party hot spot?
As fucked up as the message is, I actually think the idea of multiple genders is an interesting one. Isn't gender more of a continuum than a dichotomy anyway? When the idea is wrapped in something as poisonous as "rating" genders, it's obviously harmful. But it has me thinking...
@daisen-in: Agreed. This is an unfortunate example of multiple gender recognition being wrapped in homophobia and stereotypes. But gender IS NOT the same thing as sex, and I think it's pretty fascinating to look at cultures who recognize a variety of genders.
@heatherwritesstuff: Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. And doesn't denoting sexual orientation by "gender" actually legitimize alternative orientations more than just saying they're unnatural perversions of another gender? There's a lot of attractive ideas stuck in this mess.
@daisen-in: In some ways, yes. I did some research on India during my undergrad, and they had a bazillion gender representations all classified under one third 'gender.' Classifications mostly seemed based on a combination of gender portrayal and sexual behavior (as in, a man who dresses and behaves 'like a woman' but has sex with men is classified as a different gender than a man who dresses and behaves like a woman but has sex with women.) It's by no means a perfect classification system and certainly places too much emphasis on supposed biological 'feminine' and 'masculine' traits and fails to account for varieties of sexual behavior... but hey, it seems miles better than what we've got.
@gracie1117: No; there are only two biological sexes. GENDER is not the same thing as sex. Many cultures recognize multiple genders. Unfortch, this recognition comes complete with homophobia and stereotypes.
Just want to have that little gender =/= sex chat again, people. Unfortch, the UAE have also not realized that gender =/= sexuality. I really like the recognition of multiple genders... too bad this instance comes with stereotypes and blatant homophobia.

Apparently the UAE can't count either. Last time I checked there were only two genders.
But what do I know? I'm just a woman.
