Oh, Lindsay, that (Yes, more than usual!) was so perfectly timed. Right around the comma between condescendingly and especially, I thought to myself, "More than usual?"

I guess all I'm trying to say is: we think alike and we should be friends. In a totally normal non-creepy way.

Hooray DC! One more vote and then it's off to the mayor for signature.

Passed by a vote of 11-2. Should be noted that Marion Barry was a dissenting vote. I will be so happy to see that man disappear from public life.

@curiousgeorgiana: YAY! You know, I would love to see a Jezebel article discussing race relations and gay marriage. I say this because the two dissenting votes here in D.C. were cast by representatives from minority areas (7 and 8) who said that they were pushed by ministers and their constituents to vote against it.

I believe there was some talk about it when Prop 8 passed but I don't remember whether there was a real discussion about it. Correct me if I am wrong.

Okay, so I'm sure that no one actually cares... and I'm embarrassed that I know this. But, just because Hulk Hogan's face was bloody doesn't mean the fight was real. (My boyfriend is way into wrestling and that is how I know this.) It's called "getting color." After a wrestler gets hit in the face he grabs his hands over his face (like he's in pain) and digs his fingernails into the fleshy part above the eyes/below the eyebrows. It's the thinnest piece of skin on your face and the easiest to make bleed a lot. So yeah, it's a sick trick they do to make their fights look real. Just FYI. Oh, or sometimes around the hairline. But, mostly right above their eyes so the blood is all in their face. Sick, yeah.

The reason girls can 'relate' to Bella is that Stephanie Meyer wrote the character to be completely one-dimensional and not show any evidence of a personality (like all of her characters). Girls can imagine themselves as Bella because despite being the main character and narrator of four novels, she is literally a blank slate for them to project their own personalities on, not because she is relatable.

Oh Rachel Ray... I loathe you. I loathe your EVOO and your fake smile and your yum-O. It makes me so satisfied to hear you proclaim Martha Stewart's superiority. And I don't even like Martha that much, it's just hearing you admit that you are not so good at something. That something being what you've made your reputation on, cooking. So you're admitting you're a sham, hmmm?

@RenoDakota: Ouch! How is RR a sham? She's never claimed to be a chef, and she's always been open about her inability to bake. In all her years in the public eye, she's never shown herself to be anything but a warm, sweet and gracious person, in the face of all the vitriol that is thrown at her.

All she does is try to get busy people who might not be into cooking, to make some simple meals. Personally, I'm not into her show. My tastes run more towards Martha, but I don't hate her for offering something to other people. When I was a teen, learning to cook, I probably would have gotten a lot from her shows.

@RenoDakota: Oh I feel you. Why is someone who doesn't know about cooking trying to tell people how to cook? I mean, basic principle: don't use 'EVOO' (cringe!) in situations where you need to heat the oil! I don't like it when people attack her personally on her appearance, etc., but I guess her ethos runs contrary to mine. For me, fast, good food should be about simple, effective flavour combinations and a good technique to make the most out of the ingredients, but her food seems to rely on processed carbs, lots and lots of cheese (I LOVE cheese, but it's a lazy way to add flavour) and strangely over-complicated 'simplifications'.

@Hana Maru: yeah, it's interesting, I think R.R. is probably much more of a "teacher," in that respect. She doesn't communicate anything complicated, but her audience is not an audience of people who want to make complicated food. And I rather doubt Martha Stewart's audience is, either. Martha's show is all aspirational--I can't imagine many people finish an episode and then set out to make their own marshmallows. It's just interesting watching someone else do it.

@Hana Maru: I don't hate her, either, so I suppose that "loathe" was a strong word for me to have used.

What's always bothered me about her is that I feel like her show dumbs down food, and it dumbs down entertainment. She talks to her viewers like they're children. Maybe, as you suggested, many of them of are teenagers learning to cook so that's appropriate. But I think she's insulting to an adult audience. Obviously, she's rich from doing it, so I'm in the minority here.

@RenoDakota: For someone who thinks they don't hate her, you sure have thought a lot about all the things that bother you about her.

I didn't suggest that many in her audience are teenagers, but that they are beginner cooks. I started cooking as a teenager, I've cooked professionally in my career, but not everyone has. The things she makes are the things that I wanted to learn to make first. There's a lot of value in that. Her audience doesn't think she's insulting them.

She talks to everyone not like they're children, but like a friend who wants to learn to cook. I even saw her do a show with children and she didn't condescend to them at all. Her perky personality isn't for everybody, but there's no reason for you to say that it's fake, unless you need to come up with reasons to hate her.

@clochette: About the EVOO, she gets harped on a lot for this, but a lot of Food Network chefs do it, even Mario Batali, who uses nothing else. I once saw him pour about a gallon of it, bright green, into a pot for frying.

I don't use EVOO for cooking, but every time I've tried to stop a friend from doing it, they were surprised. Some grocery stores don't even carry regular olive oil. It's hardly a cooking standard.

@tewkesbury: LOL, I do make my own marshmallows. They're so much better! I'm in the process of planning a gingerbread house for this year, right now.

I get what you're saying, though. Not everyone is an ambitious cook, nor do they need to be pushed in that direction by someone on tv. Some people don't have the time, or the inclination, for that sort of thing.

I get P.O.'d at Martha haters too, people who rag on her for doing things "nobody" has the time for. It's there for people who want it, you know?

@julijet: 2 reasons that I know of: that it has a low smoke point, and that the delicate flavor is destroyed by cooking. However, about the second thing, since EVOO is so popular now, a lot of it is cheaper or the same price as regular OO. If you don't use it for high heat, I don't think it's a big deal.

@Hana Maru: I don't think that I don't hate her. I don't hate her. I can find her public persona distasteful without hating her because I don't know her, at all. I am sure she's lovely when not fashioning herself as brand. She's had some great bands at her SXSW party, so we've got some common ground there. I tend to reserve hatred and other such strong feelings for people I know who are truly reprehensible.

@Hana Maru: Please reread my post, because I didn't say it was a bad thing.

However, I did say in my second message that I'd spoken too strongly in my initial post. I also didn't make any "charges" against Rachel Ray. We're not talking facts here, only opinions. I stated an opinion about her public persona - that wasn't necessarily clear in my initial post, but all I was trying to express was that I found her to be cutesy and patronizing to her audience. I, apparently, am not her audience. I'm just not into what she's selling. And that's okay. It's also okay that you are. I don't feel any need to convince you otherwise because we simply have different opinions.

So I'm sorry that I seem to have offended you with my dislike for RR's show. We just have different opinions or tastes, apparently.

@RenoDakota: I did read what you wrote, and I'm amazed at all of your contradictions. The charges, including calling her a sham with a fake smile who insults her audience, were opinions, I know. They have no supporting evidence, however, and if you have no basis for your opinions, you're going to get called out. If you then dither and vacillate and don't take responsibility for what you say, that's going to get you called out too.
