Anja Rubik will always and forever be my favorite model of the '00s. It was her short haircut in the 2007 Chloe fall campaign that caused me to lop all my hair off and be as fabulous as she.
Just for sheer number of Vogue pages (and the fact that their ankles are about to snap from the jumping) I would add Caroline Trentini and Raquel Zimmerman.
How does one pronounce both the first and last name of Agyness Deyn? In my head, I tend to say AG-ee-ness, with a hard g sound and rhyming with agro, but I sometimes think maybe it's more like AGE-ee-ness, like the word age. Does the Y sound like a long E or an I? Her last name, Deyn, like dane or dine?
With all the hatred of hipsters, I'm surprised there's so much love for her.
Also, Tyra and Heidi weren't so much models this decade as they were producers that brought some fashion industry to the masses. What have they done for the modeling industry? I always here people saying that ANTM alums won't really be models. Has it had some other impact on the industry?
@hfree: @Mrs. Beeton: It looks like I was wrong all around. So the Y doesn't do anything? Extraneous letters, I curse you! You have brought much confusion in my lifetime. I thought I'd mastered you, with your silent "gh"s, "th"s, and "p"s, but you have bested me once more. This is not over. I shall conquer in this war!
How is Kate Moss not on this list? She's a bit more 90s, but she was absolutely everywhere in the naughts as well. Lots of great modeling gigs, tabloid infamy, super successful TopShop line.
@zayante: Kate Moss defined the 90s. Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer are still ubiquitous these days, but you'd hardly call them faces of the '00s.
@PilgrimSoul: Typically they're ranked primarily based on earnings and cover appearances, followed by runway and editorial work. Models.com does industrywide rankings every few weeks, taking into account the prestige of the modeling gig and the salary earned from it.
Natalia Vodianova is unbelievably beautiful. She and Doutzen Kroes are probably my favorites pretty much ever. Also I miss Carmen Kass. I remember this one photo of her; it was a black-and-white advertisement for what I can't recall, but I cut it out and saved it. She had her hair braided up milkmaid syle and you could only see maybe half of her face. It was really beautiful.
@Aesop's Foibles. YES.: Carmen is apparently still pretty busy in Europe, in December alone she's on the cover of Greek Vogue and in an editorial in Italian Vogue.
@Understater: I pretty much pee myself whenever I see photos of her. She's ridiculous. Really ridiculous. I sincerely hope I never see her IRL because I would stand there staring like a dope and she'd probably freak out and run away.
What about Lily Cole? She's so young and lovely...really want to hate her- especially given the fact she did love scenes with Heath, Johnny and Jude! But she seems pretty awesome. Loved her playing a nerd in St. Trinians!
@misssichuan: I like Lily too. In part, however, this is because my good friend teaches her and swears that she is utterly charming and lovely. My friend is also deeply impressed that Cole manages to send her essays on time from Japan and LA!
@Understater: I love Snejana's work and always feel kind of guilty about it because she's so famously, painfully size 00. She is a phenomenal model, though.
@guesskeyair: Yeah, she looked fine in that regard when she first arrived on the scene, but there was a period where I was actually worried about her health :(
I remember the Vogue cover that first featured Liya Kebede. She was just so beautiful! Of course, now they have Britney Spears on the cover. Go figure.
Love this. Liya Kebede is the most beautiful woman in the world, in my opinion. She's always been my favorite.
I've seen Natalia V. around NYC with her husband and kids (adorable of course), in ratty sweaters and no makeup. She seems really down to earth and happy.
A favorite of mine was a Domincian model named Omahrya Mota. She had this badass punk tomboy thing going, looking tough and cool, and was big in 2002/3, and I haven't heard of her much since.
@beatrice2000: How weird, I had a dream about her this week. I'd totally forgotten about her until then, but I loved her look. She did a lot of stuff for Jean Paul Gaultier...
