You know those phone calls between Gosselin's manager and Michael Lohan were just Michael trying to get John some help! He cares about him and knows he needs rehab.
Meh, I don't share the Jake Gyllenhaal love, Natalie. Not that I expect anyone here to agree ( I know there's a lot of love here for Jake G), but he gives off the same dead-eye vibe that Tom Cruise does.
@Diziet_Sma: have either of you seen Donnie Darko? I'm not a fan of too much that he's done since, but he is *fantastic* in that film. As is everyone else (Maggie Gyllenhal, Patrick Swayze and every other supporting actor in it). That film rocks.
@femminista: Yeah, of course. It's a great movie, one of my all-time favorites, in fact. But I'm talking about Jake Gyllenhaal as a person, rather than as an actor.
@femminista: I've seen it and loved it but, even in that film, he's got a kind of detachment that pervades every role I've seen him play (even Brokeback). Such an interesting pedigree, and yet...
@heykoukla: Never noticed the dead-eye vibe, I was always too busy looking at all his muscles. ;) I kid, sort of. Really though, maybe he's kind of dumb or dull, but Tom Cruise dead-eyed? I detect a soul behind those eyes.
@heykoukla: You know, on second thought, I can kind of see what you mean re: the detachment factor. It works for certain roles, and not so much in others (oh, the horror that is Bubble Boy).
@ Diziet_Sma: gotcha. And I can admit it. As a person, he can come across a bit milk-toasty.
@heykoukla: Heh.. actually, I saw a poster for Brothers and remarked how they'd managed to squeeze three of the actors I dislike the most into one film.. Natalie Portman, Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal.
I realize that sentiment may be only my own.
@femminista: Donnie Darko is great and he's perfect in the role.
I think Jake is a good actor (not brilliant, but solid, good...)
My real love for him comes because he is so damn dreamy. Almost all the news that I ever read about him is about how sweet is his to his friends and family.
He took on a "gay role" which, sadly, is risky in Hollywood. Esp, for someone without a long, (fairly) solid career (I'm looking at you Sean Penn!)
When discussing Broke Back he always discussed it as a "romance" rather than a "GAY romance" despite the wording of interviewers and critiques of the film. I respect and admire him for that- for keeping it real.
He's not a big fame-whore. Just a working actor and nice guy. Who happens to be blessed with adorably good looks, dark hair, and blue eyes...swoon!
I suspect this is why many others have such huge crushes on him.
That was a very long defense. Ha! I guess, I'm a bigger fan that I realized!
@fluxus flucker: dreamy. That's accurate AND it even suggests a bit of detachment... I support you in your defense of J Gyl. Also, quasi-related, I have a major crush on his sister. People can say what they will about Jake, but my girl Maggie can do NO wrong.
@fluxus flucker: It's true about Brokeback - I respect him for that. He is attractive, physically, and he seems like a nice guy (as opposed to a douche, which appears to be the young guy-in-Hollywood default); I mean, a definitely don't dislike him. He just doesn't do it for me. But I'm weird, so there's that.
Student: Science is based on evidence, where religion is based on faith.
Kirk: But Darwinism is extremely based on faith
Student: Not really, it's based on a lot of evidence.
From the link re: Kirk Cameron v Darwin. That right there made my morning. Bless your cotton socks, Mike Seaver.
@WaltzingMatilda: Yeah. Got to see it for the first time because it was on after Modern Family, but I like it and I don't think it is getting canceled anytime soon as it is doing well.
@WaltzingMatilda: I, too, watch this show, and I have a question that has been bugging me to no end. Has Christa Miller had too much botox, and her face/lips no longer move, or is she acting and it is a part of the character?
@canthelpmyself: That is an excellent question - and I have the same one! It is crazy. I think back to her on Scrubs, I don't think she always looked like that, but her character then was all about plastic surgery. I just really don't know.
Kirk Cameron was presenting at UCLA? I thought people of his ilk only preached to the choir, operating in a complete echo chamber. Hence the reason why his best piece of evidence for creationism is the croco-duck.
@MegiEr: I just watched the video (admittedly I didn't watch before I initially commented). It seems that he was only expecting to hand out literature and didn't necessarily expect anyone to confront him or engage him in debate. Also, I want that woman to be my friend.
Hey. So I was going to comment on Nicole Kidman's obvious lip enhancement on display at the AMA's the other day when I noticed that someone had been disemvoweled for doing exactly that. How is commenting on Gyllenhaal's nose any different? Not that I mind, because I really don't see how saying "it looks like [famous person] got work done" is particularly harmful, but it seems like a double standard.
@eatsshootsleaves: I gots to agree, I don't think calling someone out for either horrible or really noticeable plastic surgery is body snarking, there was a choice involved. Ms. Kidman has three lips now and looks NOTHING like she used to, its also painful ot see her in movies now trying to show emotion when half her face doesn't move. Isn't it disingenuous to pretend we don't notice?
@eatsshootsleaves: I think it might depend what you say about it. I've seen people point out work, and we certainly are all excited about Amy's boobs. Maybe they said something body snarky when it was pointed out? I hope so, because if not, that is a total double standard.
@itsonreserve: From what I can make out, she said she was "scared" of Nicole Kidman's artificial-looking lip enhancements. She meant this facetiously. I suppose that could be seen as body snarking, but certainly people have said similar things about hair, make-up, and clothing -- I don't think elective plastic surgery is much different, apart from its permanence. Whether or not you agree, I don't see how saying that it looks like Jake Gyllenhaal changed his nose isn't similar. In both cases, the point of the comment is saying a particular part of someone's body looks fake.
@eatsshootsleaves: awe, it's ye ol' double standard. goes along with disemvoweling comments about obese people but doing nothing about the "go eat a sammich" crew. I saw a comments section get boiled down to people calling a commenter stupid, c*cksucker, etc. because they didn't share the majority's view point...
@eatsshootsleaves: I didn't see the comment you're talking about but I would guess that it was being derogatory, 'She looks like a duck'; rather than saying 'She looks like she's had her lips done'?
@maggiethecat: That's not true - anyone saying 'eat a sammich' would definitely get disemvowelled, and if they didn't it would only be because Hortense didn't see it. If you ever see those kind of comments, you can email her to draw her attention to it. As for threads deteriorating into name-calling, same thing - tell Hortense.
@maggiethecat: I see "eat a sammich" comments disemvowelled all the time, and I've emailed about them when they're still up-they're usually taken down immediately. If you see comments like that you should contact Hortense.
@Diziet_Sma: well, that's good to know because that argument between four or five people went super duper personal- like I was watching a Maury DNA marathon with all the insults and jabs flying. I was reading and reading and waiting for some disemvowel with dull knife= nada. It was like reading comments on youtube.
@eatsshootsleaves: I'm not sure if reconstructing a disemvowelled comment is wise. I'd say that fake or not, those lips are still part of her face. Talking about body parts as scary is not a helpful or kind way of talking about women.
@eatsshootsleaves: I dunno, if someone said to you "Your face scares me" would you be insulted?
It's harmful because it encourages the notion that, as women, all our worth is wrapped up in our appearance; whether a woman is deemed attractive or not becomes the first thing to say about her - isn't there anything else one can say about Nicole Kidman? It makes you think before you comment and most people like coming here because the comments are more interesting and thoughtful as a result.

@Diziet_Sma: But doesn't the constant surgical tweaking of one's appearance to appear younger and/or more traditionally sexually desirable also feed the same notion? To me, it's a sign of deep insecurity fed by a toxic industry.
@mwynn13: Of course - but do we have to add to the vicious circle by mocking her for it? I, personally, cannot stop Nicole Kidman from having plastic surgery, but I, personally, can decide to stop making an issue of it, which means her appearance becomes less important than other aspects of her (her work, her character, her talent etc), which is at least a teeny, tiny step in the right direction. I mean, there is nothing witty or original about that disemvowelled comment, so why bother saying it?
The Morning Show Murders? Way to think outside the box there Al. Are the characters named Latt Mauer and Veredith Miera? Is there a crazy old man that inexplicably shows up and talks about even older people, jam and the war on pancakes?
So the person had no clue who Miley was but they knew enough to think to call page six?
And James Earl Jones, as someone who is embarrassed by older people having sex, I completely agree with you that it should be dealt with and not just dispensed with. It is a ridiculous feeling - although to be fair, for the most part anyone having sex embarrasses me.

I was sucked in because of it being placed after Modern Family. Good move, ABC.
Yes, it has a grown up Monica Geller, but it also has Busy Philipps, Christa Miller, and the excellent Dan Byrd. So there.
