When did the Simpsons morph from legitimately funny satire to just trying to do perfect imitations of pop culture phenomena? Sure the Mad Men spoof was cute, and the riffing on the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown was well-executed, but I mean ... it wasn't funny. Go watch the 1996 Halloween episode (when Kang and Kodos switched places with Clinton and DOle) and remember when the Simpsons was really god damn funny. It makes last night's episode completely unwatchable.

For the first time I let my 10-year-old son watch this and he was embarrassed by the sex toy thing, and confused as hell by the gay Lincoln and Washington thing-- not because they were gay, but because they "weren't from the same time period."

But most of the time he was giggling. Especially at the voting booth skit. He's very politically engaged.

I seem to be alone thus far on this, but I thought this episode was pretty awful compared to the previous 18. It's like they're not even trying anymore and just want to be done.

This was really good. I loved the intro and the Great Pumpkin segments.

I showed my students Treehouse of Horrors eps last Thursday in class, since we're starting a media unit. Also, original Twilight Zones. That'll probably add to the complaints on RMP that I show "random weird TV shows." Spoilsports.

That was one of the better Halloween episodes. I loved Tom Turkey's Puritan speak, the spoof of the "Great Pumpkin"'s artwork and Krusty telling Homer that the true religion is a "mix of Voodoo and Methodist." It's not up there with the Vampire Burns and the Time Traveler Homer segments but it was still cool.

Does anyone know what Bart was dressed up as? He looked like a ghost with a lot of eyes. Maybe it's a peanuts reference that I didn't get because I've never seen the Great Pumpkin movie. I loved the pumpkin's dying words: "pumpkin segregation FOREVER!"

I look forward to the Treehouse of Horror every Halloween. The Peanuts "Grand Pumpkin" spoof reminds me of the SNL sketch "Delicious Dish" where Dana Carvey has an eyepatch and the one woman gets offended about her religion involving the Great Pumpkin.
