    Seriously, I understand that a lot of teens like Miley Cyrus, and parents probably don't want their kids clamoring for a piercing, but as long as she's taking good care of it, this is not a big deal.

    I like how when she does something that may or may not be edgy, Miley makes a big deal about it and talks it up. It's like she wants someone to disapprove ... "I hope no one is upset with me" in my mind translates to "Please strangers, be upset, cause controversy, I want attention and edginess and I don't feel like don't anything that out of the ordinary to obtain it."

    @swimmingly: I love mine, but they ARE a pain in the ass. I knocked mine out once while I was sleeping and by the time I woke up and realized it was out, it had already started growing back. It hurt like hell (and bled) when I put it back in.

    @swimmingly: Is it like that with tiny cartilage piercings? Because the stud in my upper ear hurts like a BITCH when I sleep on it, but my industrial is fine. (Maybe it's cause I did the tiny one myself?)

    @swimmingly: I had mine done at 14, but it drove me crazy and I had to take it out after a while.


    I now have had my tongue pierced for 10 years though, and I love it and hardly ever notice it's there.

    @Pennyfeather: I took mine out for work (I'd gotten a clear spacer, but I forgot to put it in) and it nearly closed within three hours. I got the spacer back in, but I fear I will have to cut the spacer and repierce when I quit my job at the end of the summer.


    Sadness. You'd think a sports bar would be chill about nose piercings, as server uniforms are jeans and a tshirt, and no one else in the place wears uniforms at all. But no.

    @SpasticFurchild: I did a helix cartilage piercing myself in my bathroom a few years ago (In retrospect, I understand there are a great many risks involved, and it's something you sort of do at your own peril.)


    I've had lousy experiences with studs, because my ear likes to swell up, and the backing of the stud creates a spot for gunk and crud and nasties to accumulate. I had much better results when I got a sterling silver hoop--one of the ones that snaps or screws shut with a captive bead. This gives the newly pierced tissue room to expand along the curvature of the hoop. It's a little easier for me to sleep on - if I wear studs, I have a tendency to mash the backing into my ear, which is uncomfortable even for the piercings I've had for many years!


    New piercings are always really difficult to sleep on, too. It actually took a year or two for my newest helix piercing to stop acting up. I always had to carry around a little baggie of sea salt and a tiny Dixie cup so I could make a warm-water sea-salt soak and dunk the damn top of my ear in it so it would stop freaking out.
