@If_I_Had_a_Poodle: But when a pretty white girl goes missing, they show cute photos of her, in this case it's photos of the mother where she looks soulless and sinister #appic
@If_I_Had_a_Poodle: Because of laws that say that being mentally ill isn't a social issue, mental health services since the 70s have been poorly funded along with the fact it's very hard to get many severely mentally ill people to go to treatment. It's very hard for some mentally ill to see exactly how ill they are.
You can't force people to stay in services unless there is justifiable cause to believe that immediate harm will come to either the person or people around, and there's not enough money for the beds and the services needed. So you try your best to get someone who is committed as stable as possible as quickly as possible (often with just meds, little to no therapy), and off they go until they are committed again.
Such a double edged sword...you don't want to take away someone's rights as a citizen because they are mentally ill, but it leaves the door open for those who aren't specifically obvious in their intent to do harm. It was horrendous to watch children that were in a facility I worked in be released to the parents that were causing most of the mental harm because we couldn't prove the parents were as bad as we knew they were.
It's like the article this week about rapists, horrible parents will easily admit to their actions, as long as you don't call them bad parents. And the system requires you to call them bad parents.
Which is why I now teach rather than work mental health. It broke my heart.
@If_I_Had_a_Poodle: I hope you are not calling me brave, although I appreciate the compliment if you are. It's my friends who stayed in mental health, desperately working against odds to provide decent treatment in a system few realize isn't working, who are brave. I ran away. :(
The mental health system is broken in so many ways. #appic
@cellydevil: I taught for 5 mins in an underfunded underprivileged school, where a few brave teachers tried to do right by the kids who landed in their classrooms via all kinds of circumstances, but the game was stacked against everyone. It was stacked against the kids who wanted to learn, who had to contend with chaos in their classrooms as well as at home. It was stacked against the kids who were too troubled to learn, who were offered no help to get them ready to learn. And it was stacked against the teachers, who had no way to help the troubled kids (no referrals for counselling, no precare, no aftercare, no inschool medical care) who disrupting those who were ready to learn
I came out of it thinking schools should be open from 6 am to 8 pm and serve 3 meals and offer medical care and counseling for troubled kids and their parents
We can spend money on schools or we can spend money on prisons
@If_I_Had_a_Poodle: You are exactly right. There is a reason our prisons are filled with minorities, the mentally ill, and career criminals. We fail to recognize we never give some people chances. That's why when one of my underprivileged students shine, they shine brighter than all the rest. They know how rare the true chances are to succeed. #appic
@cellydevil: The kids' psych hospital I work in is the same. We're the only public one in the state, so we get the kids no one else will take because they are on medicaid, or are too ill, or too dangerous. So many of my kids come from shitty homes, but we have to send them back as soon as they're stable because we can't prove that the homes are as bad as we KNOW they are. It's frustrating and heartbreaking. #appic
@cellydevil: @Her Grace: It's the same everywhere. Suggestion: email and call the local elected officials: city, state and congress/sentate, and get others to do it. Start a Facebook group or join one. Ask others to do the same. It could turn into a movement. We have the technology. #appic
@FrannyR: I saw pictures of the girl on the news...she is (as one might expect) really really really cute! Point taken however, regarding the typical attention a missing white girl getts by the media. #appic
So if we don't help children and families, we end up paying for it in the end. I'm just finishing my master's degree in children's mental health. #appic
Who are the coldless people who aid in the black market of human trafficking? You really have to separate yourself from humanity. You know that stupid trailor for the new Cameron Diaz movie where she's told that she can get million dollars but someone in the world will die...um, I would NEVER press that button. Is that seriously a choice people would mull over? #appic
@JinxyMcDeath: Word. In one of the trailers her character asks the Frank Langella character if there are consequences for not pressing the button and he says that there are always consequences, but dude, wouldn't you rather deal with the consequences of NOT killing someone?! Of course being that it's a feel shitty movie the consequence is probably something horrible like a murderer goes free and ends up killing someone in your family. But still... blood money = bad juju. And it's you know, morally wrong. #appic
That woman's face is haunting. So cold, so angry, so contemptuous.
Where did she come from? What is her story? What did she confront as a young child, that she would do such things to her own child? I ask these questions not in order to excuse her actions, but because I firmly believe that abuse engenders abuse, and incidents like this one can only be prevented by breaking the cycle of violence much further back in a family's history--that is, when the abuse is less extreme, and more "normal." Smacking, hitting, and verbally abusing small children should shock the conscience, but our culture has gotten us used to the idea that somehow you can use violence as a teaching tool, and not reap any negative consequences from that.
I pray (even though I'm an atheist) that the little girl is found soon, and that she finds someone to protect and care for her, just as all children should be. Hopefully her father, as Ides said. #appic

Try as I might, I'm not seeing any of that in the picture above. She looks... like just about anyone else taking a mugshot (I know it from my learnings on TSG). #appic
@Sadako: Yeah, that was my reaction...like give her some sleep and some lipgloss and she'd be a pretty lady. Just goes to show that you can't judge a book by their cover. #appic
Sorry, but since I had the pleasure of watching "Playground" this morning, a doc at TFF on child abuse/porn and human trafficking, I'm going to say it is more than appropriate to begin castrating these disgusting predators.
Yeah I got to start the morning off with stories of 6 months old pimped for crack, so this dude and many many others are beyond deserving of fellatio performed by manual lawn mowers. In fact, can Sebulius get on this already?
Barbara Perry seems to be spicing up her revisionistish history with dashes of orientalism. I thought the whole point of "change" was to like stop the unpostcolonialism bs.
Her marriage shows that not all black women are baby mamas and black guys run away from their responsibilities. Also her marriage is an example of all people of color...hell all people.. that marriage can a joining of equals who love and respect each other and are willing make sacrifices for relationship and family. Like both Michelle and Obama have said in many interviews, their marriage wasn't always easy and they had to make many sacrifices along the way. She's also an example that you can be smart and successfully and you don't have to dumb yourself them for any man.
The moral of the story for Jezzies who would like to share their lives with someone either now or in the future, you do not have to settle.
@Rooo sez BISH PLZ: lol seriously where is the preview button? Talking about not dumbing yourself down in a typo filled message...irony i haz. Let's fix that. Edits below
She's also an example that you can be smart and successful and you don't have to dumb yourself down for any man.
And yes i agree with Heather Ferreira, Michelle is an inspiration to dark women/women without sons because until you've lived in places with these persasive pressures like Africa, Asia and Latin America you have no idea. I'm from Africa and have lived in Africa for many years and i'll tell you the aftermath of colonialization is still alive and well. There is very overt privilege and benefits to being light skinned and having long hair and people will go through dangerous measures to try and achieve this ideal. Its funny how a lot of African and Indian cultures overlap but sometimes having a darker skin and hold back your ability to move up a cast system particularly in India having fair skin is an asset for single girls looking to get married and telling someone 'oh you're so light' is a compliment.
Also the pressure for women to have a male child in many Africa/Asian countries is so overwhelming that in some places it is just cause to end a marriage or marry a second wife, if a woman 'cannot' produce a male child. YES seriously, be thankful you live in America because stuff like this happens....and is deemed okay by society.
Like that Diary show on MTV says "You think you know but you have no idea"
@Eric Northman is MINE (nee Sookie Stackhouse): the culture of latin america is quite different from the cultures of africa and asia. also, countries vary greatly within latin america. presently, argentina and chile both have female presidents and i never heard of women as a whole in my country feeling pressure to have a male child.
@raquel8: Yeah i was referring to the lighter skin issue when referencing Latin America. That issue seems to be prevalent in a lot of countries that were colonized. The male child issue as I stated in the last paragraph is more of an issue in some African and Asian countries.
Pictures of the rescued gorilla are at the link below. She is in good hands now. Let's hope she recovers. http://gorilla.cd/2009/04/28/baby-gorilla-seized-in-trafficking-ring-bust/
@RodolfoRabulous: Aw, she is DARLING! That article brought up something I wondered, who the F is buying baby gorillas? I mean, do you raise them for bush meat like cows, or do you keep them as pets? WTF? Insane.
