Wow, I don't see anything amusing about that. This brings to mind a video clip from 1937 of the "Apache Dance." It's done with both parties consenting and is choreographed, but...
This isn't funny because it is a real video. If it were a cartoon skit on Family Guy it might be funny. But Family Guy is a cartoon geared for adults that know they are about to watch something highly offensive. I guess what I'm saying is that its not funny because its not a satire... its a REAL video.
@unmoldednicole: Family Guy has been going way too far lately. They have a joke about rape in just about every episode, to the point where a lot of people aren't watching anymore.
@unmoldednicole: Right. It's skipping a step that's making it "ironically funny" wherein you're laughing at the person doing the hitting because they are pathetic and it's okay to do so because no one is really getting hurt. Clearly not the case here.
@Jorie Slodki: I agree. Family Guy, which has made some hilariously funny jokes about completely taboo topics (racism, classism, sexism, antisemitism, abuse, etc.) has been skipping that ever important step lately. Rather than laughing at the perpetrator of horrible acts, we seem to be meant to laugh WITH them and AT the victim and it's just in poor taste.
I'm confused. Is the slapping supposed to be part of the dance? Because in the video it just looks like one guy slaps his partner and everyone else ignores it or tries to break it up.
This just puzzles me. I can't even think what anyone would find funny about that, even if they were a huge misogynist. They dance, he slaps her, they dance some more. And the funny is... what?
Can't watch it, Hortense... tried but stopped. It frightens me that anyone could laugh at someone strong/powerful humiliating and hurting someone weaker.
@SomeAuthorGirl: Except she looks like she could take his ass down if she wanted. It's weird because it just came out of nowhere, she obviously wasn't expecting it. Bizarre.
Yeah...I watched that clip and I don't see the humor in it at all. I can't even fathom why people would be amused by it or want to play it over and over. I am not outraged over it either- it is creepy and that man is a piece of shit- but I just don't see anything funny about it.
What's absurd about slapping your wife in the face? I really would like to hear what you think, because so far no one has had an explanation.
So, you're looking at your wife, gazing into her eyes a bit, dancing with her at a party, and then you slap her in the face because she missed a turn? What, precisely, is absurd about that? It seems like it would only be funny if you don't think it's hurtful to be slapped in the face in public, or, well, if you're a real dick.
@Mafalda para Presidente: Given the fact that you can't tell tone of voice over the internet, I don't think it's "OMG" strange that some of us weren't sure about what exactly this comment meant.
@Dizzy8: It's ridiculous to hit anyone (let alone someone you supposedly love) in the middle of a fox trot. Thats why it's absurd and to some people funny. I personally didn't find the video funny but I've laughed at plenty of things in the past that would fall under the same category as this video.
@Jackiewsu: Since you've clarified that's what you meant, I have to disagree. I'm not sure that you're using the word "absurdity" correctly, either. Absurd would be the man starting to fox-trot dance during a waltz. Wrong would be hitting his wife for a minor offense.
@Mafalda para Presidente: No, I just wanted to through the question out there. I enjoy comedy and I tend to have a darker sense of humor. Domestic violence is and evil unconscionable act but isn't that the basis of most comedy?
@Jackiewsu: This isn't dark humor. Dark Humor is Heathers making suicide painfully funny, playing on stereotypes. This is just a guy hitting is wife.
Evil really isn't the basis for most comedy- Jezebel is on a bromance kick right now and I have a hard time coming up with anything really violent or evil in those movies (though I haven't seen the Hangover). Most comedy is playing on the humor of everyday awkwardness. Even when it deals with psychopaths, the humor is usually about the ordinary details like in American Psycho- it isn't funny that he kills people, its funny that he kills people in such a yuppie way.
