Seriously—any skiing/snowboarding Jezzies care to recommend a good place for a first skiing experience? I'd love to try a ski vacation, but I have no idea where to go. I grew up in the Southeast U.S., and I've always heard that the skiing in NC/VA/WV is kinda sucky...but "real" ski resorts seem like they might be overwhelming for a newbie like me.

@Kivrin: Well, I learned in Ruidoso, NM, which is within driving distance of the place where I grew up, and I still go every now and then to ski with my parents or with old friends from my hometown. It's more reasonably priced than others ski resorts and I don't think you'd feel as overwhelmed in terms of people in attendance. #torahjanebright

@Kivrin: I live in Utah and I highly recommend just about anyplace here. The conditions are great, the costs aren't as high as other "destination" skiing areas, and really great instructors abound if you are interested in taking a class (which I recommend, it can make a drastic difference). That said, I grew up on the west coast and learned to ski in WA/OR, so I'd say from experience that most places in these states are fine as well, and I would assume most places in CA are similar. I learned to snowboard on the east coast and would advise against most east coast locations, with the possible exception of VT/NH which are supposed to be really nice. You definitely don't need powder or any such thing when you're first learning, but if the snow is crusty/icy/packed down too much (as is more often the case out east) then it will be more difficult to learn and possibly turn you off of skiing altogether.

The other thing to keep in mind is that a lot of the big resorts offer beginner's packages these days, which include gear rental and lift tickets for just the beginners/smaller lifts. These are often much more reasonably priced than the lift tickets for the whole mountain, so you won't feel like you're wasting your money on something you can't really use yet anyway. #torahjanebright
