You could have, in a sense, feminism without feminists. You could have, for example, Leslie Sanchez or Sarah Palin.

In reply to The Challenges Of Raising Kids Vegetarian
The kids I knew who grew up on strict vegan/macro/strictly vegetarian diets seemed to go to extremes when hitting college - either binging on unhealthy foods or displaying severly orthorexic behaviors. I'm sure there's a happy middle ground, but I don't know how people achieve it...

This was also in the Midwest, which didn't really have good vegetarian options until very recently.

Anna, thank you for all the veggie posts. I've recently returned to a vegan diet and it's been very inspiring.

I intend to raise any accidental babies veggie, I am paranoid about all those hormones and antibiotics.

Also I find that a veggie diet helps me focus on food as fuel (will I get enough iron today and do I need a bit more protein?), not as comfort. I hope it will help me pass a healthy food relationship onto the kiddos. #vegetariankids

Anna, I'd hazard a guess that you disliked foods with flavor as a kid because you may have had more fungiform papillae (aka bumps on your tongue that house taste buds). Kids have more of them than adults (they die off as we get older, which is why we appreciate coffee and other bitter things that we couldn't stand as kids). Some kids have a *lot* more of them and are much more sensitive to strong tastes (especially bitter and spicy things) as a result.

Or you might just have been a really picky eater. #vegetariankids

@la.donna.pietra: I have wondered whether I was a "supertaster," as has a friend of mine who is still really picky (I'm not anymore). It would make me feel better, as I still feel guilty about being such a picky kid. It was really annoying for my parents, friends' parents, basically anyone who ever had to deal with feeding me. #vegetariankids

In reply to The Challenges Of Raising Kids Vegetarian
The only real difficulty for vegetarian kids I can see is dealing with dinners at friends' houses. I went veg at the tender age of 12 and I always felt (and in some ways still feel) like a bit of burden as a dinner guest. But that's something that you can get over, and in many ways I think it has made me a more considerate guest because I always make sure to bring things and help.

As for the health angle, I'm a very healthy vegetarian and I think most people are. I don't know whether I'd raise my children to be vegetarian (it would depend on their father), but I don't particularly want to cook meat, so it may happen by default if not by design. #vegetariankids

In reply to The Challenges Of Raising Kids Vegetarian
If I have kids, I'll definitely raise them as vegetarians! I really don't want my kids to have food issues, so I wouldn't "enforce" a vegetarian diet by punishing the kids for eating meat, or making them feel badly if they did (apart from educating them about what I feel is a healthy and ethical diet). Like most values and traditions you raise your kids with, there is an age where they should get to pick what they will accept. I would probably never cook meat for my kids all the way up to age 18, but what they choose to eat when we go out, or when they are with friends would be up to them. #vegetariankids

I wish my mom had raised me as a vegetarian. I HATED most meat and spent many long nights at the dinner table refusing to eat meatloaf or whatever else she had made.

Also, this led to me being malnourished as a child because we had meat and starch--never vegetables. I don't remember ever being served salad as a kid. Kids can't live a healthy life on nothing but macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes. #vegetariankids

@Tippi Hedren: I'm having a vegetarian wedding reception, and my family freaked out about it, and was like, "oh no, your in-laws are going to know you're a freak, and they'll be all worried you're going to raise their grandchildren as vegetarians." They are perpetually under the impression that I am doing a horrible job presenting myself as an acceptable wife for my future husband.

Which is really rich, because they raised me on a diet of fishsticks, orange soda, macaroni and cheese, burgers and Cheetos. What vegetables we had were boiled to submission, and not at all edible. Yet, the idea that I'd feed my kids a vegetarian diet is horrifying to them. #vegetariankids

@GoldenRatioφ (aka -girl11): My friends had an all vegetarian reception. It was awesome. The food was served family style so you could pick and choose, and avoid something that wasn't in your comfort zone. They even had the Morningstar Farms (I think) meatballs. They asked to caterer to put it on the menu and he did. Everything was really, really yummy. #vegetariankids

@stacyinbean: I think what Don said about him is correct, that he is always ahead of the curve. They are going to need that sort of person in a start-up business more than they needed another guy (Roger Sterling) with nice hair and the ability to schmooze clients.
Also, they probably knew he was pissed off at not getting the promotion (missing work, not showing up at the wedding, etc.) and guessed that he might be getting his clients together in order to jump ship anyway. Though Roger did call him a little shit at the bar in offended tones, which was awesome!

@stacyinbean: I get the feeling that Pete works harder. Ken does a good job and doesn't seem to worry about his work, but Pete pours himself into his accounts and stresses about them. It seems that for Ken his job is just that, but for Pete it's his whole life. That's something that Don can recognize. #madmenseasonfinale

Mr. Pietra eats dead critters. I don't. Most of our meals consist of whatever I've made for myself with some meat made separately and added to his portion. Any future pietra.offspring will have a choice between eating what Mom is having or what Dad is having, and if s/he ends up going one way or another, it's cool. Vegetarianism was a personal decision for me when I was 13, and I feel it should be the same for any kid of mine. Besides, I wouldn't want to rob my kid of the thrills of being morally superior at the all-so-wise age of 13ish.*

Born and raised vegetarian, I can attest to the challenges a kid will face, especially in school and at birthday parties. No pepperoni pizza. Birthday cake made with eggs? No way.

That said, I never felt like rebelling. My parents gave me the option of making my own decision at age 12, and I chose to remain vegetarian. None of my friends were veggie, but both they and their parents were always accommodating. I ate my fair share of PB&Js though.

Oddly enough our family got the most flack from relatives who were convinced we were malnourished. Both of my grandmas attempted to get me (and my brothers) to eat meat, but we stuck to our guns. #vegetariankids

I think anyone trying to raise a child vegetarian should look into Bento Box lunches. You can get some really cute stuff like egg presses which make boiled eggs look like bunnies or molds to make balls of rice into adorable shapes. I think any non-vegetarian elementary school student would be jealous of some of the stuff you can put in a bento because it's cute. It's better to stand out for being the kid whose mom packs Pokemon themed lunches than the weird kid who eats carrots. #vegetariankids

@Zombie Ms. Skittles: I just bought a Laptop Lunchbox for myself. Even without doing cute/fancy stuff, I love having different-sized little containers and compartments, and the variety of having a little bit of several things rather than one big thing. (Also, unlike authentic bento, I can be lazy and put them in the dishwasher or microwave.)

The critiscism of the Feminine Mystique applying to a certain demographic of women was sort of highligthed in this episode when Betty jets off to Reno and leaves Carla behind with her kids. I don't know if it was explicity stated on the show but I've always assumed Carla is married. What about her kids and family? After a long day of work, Carla and other women who didn't have the option not to work, have to go home and still be in charge of running the household/catering to her husband. For this reason, I've always emphatized a lot more with Carla (next fav is Joan) than any other woman on the show.

I love how Carla is portrayed but I wish they would show more of her outside the Draper household, i know i know she's not a main character but still. I get that they dont show much of her because she's supposed to be invisible but this is one character I would really love to know more about. #madmenseasonfinale

@Eric Northman is mine: My theory on Carla and other black characters on Mad Men is that they often represent the audience. They are outsiders watching, and judging, all the craziness. There are many times when you see a look that makes it clear Carla or the elevator opera sees through all of the bullshit and lies. This was particularly strong in the first season. #madmenseasonfinale

I didn't realize until last night's ep that Don probably shouldn't be married. Or at least, not to one person. He should be single and having flings that he can quit when he feels like it.

He is one of those people who is married to work b/c it's where he's always in control, where he always has an answer for every problem and he's always the go-to guy who's sitting on top. Even in the scenes when Peggy, Roger and Pete were trying to humble him by making him ask them for things (instead of him just demanding and everyone hopping to it), he had dignity and strength and was cocksure because in the end, he knew he'd get what he wanted. At home, he's lost and angry and sad because nothing is turning out the way he expected them to. #madmenseasonfinale

@willwriteforfood: Actually, I think that Pete and Peggy and Roger succeeded in extracting their pound of flesh from Don. He was humbled, and took to task when he really wanted the end result. But with really important things - like his relationship with his wife and children - he's incapable of doing anything for them. Perhaps he and Connie are more alike than he'd like to admit. #madmenseasonfinale

For such an uneven season I think that season finale may be my series favorite. The only way it could have been better was if Jane was found dismembered in the trunk of Ken Cosgrove('s), cipher...I mean accounts, Chevy. Unnecessary tonal shift yes, but so so satisfying.
