In reply to Are Colleges Discriminating Against Women?
I wonder how much of this is comes from that whole ZOMG CRISIS OF MASCULINITY! thing and how much of it comes from the fact that if there are overwhelmingly male colleges like service academies and tech schools, there are going to end up having to be schools that are going to be more heavily female, especially seeing how women have (I believe) at 55/45% advantage in college enrollment. #genderincollegeadmissions

Same trend with A&E. Remember Biography? America's Castles? Such great nerd porn. Now Biography just copies E! true hollywood stories and is relegated to its own ghettoized channel, and I haven't seen an America's Castles episode since 1999. The nearest substitute is the Ghost Hunter show that goes to historic homes with creepy floor-squeaks. And remember the Great Books show narrated by Andre Brauer? gone. I'm sad for me, and also for the children. I cry. #thehistorychannel

Don't forget all of the documentaries on gangs of all stripes. I often refer to the History Channel as the Penis Channel, because it seems designed only to appeal to a certain sector of creepy young men with a taste for violence.

I would love the History Channel so much more if it focused on history that is relevant to more than just the military fetishists among us. I once caught a documentary on some channel about the 1960s and the sexual revolution and I was fucking hooked for all two hours and all commercial breaks. I watched all of the historical extras on the Mad Men DVDs. I love Ken Burns' stuff. I am reading a critical Mormon women's history and poring over old issues of an LDS women's publication right now - FOR FUN.

Oh well. I suppose I shall continue to sate my nerd hungers with Science TV. (Now with more Michio Kaku!) #thehistorychannel

The last show I watched on THC was last summer and it was all about how ancient people were being assisted by alien intervention because CLEARLY that was the only explanation for their ingenuity and inventiveness. Oddly, none of the so-called experts featured in the show mentioned alien intervention in the European arena. Just the, a-hem, darker skin? areas of the globe. #thehistorychannel

History International is in full control of the house remote. While I like MonsterQuest (go, Yeti, go!), MysteryQuest is a snooze-fest rehash of more exciting History Channel documentaries. Also need to rant about the 2012 focus. Do we NEED upteen-hundred shows saying the world is going to end in 2012?! Seriously, what more can be said past "the Mayan calendar ends on (date)." And as for Nostradamus...wow. How many times do we need to see The Beard Guy telling us all what Nostradamus is saying (read: his personal interpretation of the quatrains)! GAH!

Oh, History Channel, how I miss the old you. #thehistorychannel

@RoseColette (fewer thorns; more coffee): My favorite criticism of Nostradamus is that he's a post-cognitionist. You don't look at his writings and go, "shit! We all better stay home on September 11!" you look at his writings and go, "Hey look! Hitler happened!" #thehistorychannel

Erich Von Daniken, the L. Ron of the Ancient Aliens movement, seems oblivious to the implicit racism and ethnocentricism of his theories.

In my dreams, the History Channel would do a show about the cultural, racial and social implications of Ancient Aliens, but then, they would get a thousand letters about how "You're reading too much into this" and "Aliens are neutral!"

    2012: Apocalypse Soon? it is.

(Although to be fair, I remember watching a History Channel show on how the world was going to end on May 5, 2000 as a youngster which I fixated on for months.) #thehistorychannel

It seems like a lot of the good, straight history oriented stuff (although still with a heavy focus on WWII battles and the like) has moved to History International, which I am happy to have included as part of my cable package. I do still enjoy the occasional Modern Marvels episode, which I believe is still airing on the 'regular' History channel but not at peak hours, of course. #thehistorychannel

YES! THANK YOU! I just tried to make this point with my husband the other day. It has waaaaay too many shows about Masons (they control everything!), conspiracy theories, the DaVinci code (it's a fiction novel, people!). And all those shows don't even have substance, it's just a whole bunch of "experts" ruminating the same point over and over and over and over. #thehistorychannel

The History Channel permanently lost me as a viewer when they started showing all apocalypse programming all the time. They had me terrified for about FOUR YEARS that the world was coming to an end before I read a Cracked article (yes really) that pointed out that the "end of the Mayan Calendar" was actually the end of a specific Mayan Calendar called the "long count" that counted off like, 5 thousand year increments or something incredibly high like that. The Mayans would have just thrown a party and started back from one. When I'm getting more educational programming from cracked.com than from the History channel, something is not right.

Although the History Channel has always had that weird undercurrent of the paranormal to it even before reality TV. I remember back in 1998 my brother and I used to watch reruns of "In Search Of..." starring Leonard Nemoy at 1pm.

@futuremouse: Ugh. Thank you! I watched that 2012 special the other night, and it was so laughable.

Instead of focusing on ancient Mayan culture, actual science, or anything at all educational, they had some guy taking apart a watch and saying that the changes in "energy" around Mayan ruins proves that they were technologically advanced and could predict the Endtimes. There was also some nutbag who claimed to have deciphered secret "codes" in the Bible through a special mathematical formula (which was not explained in any detail, natch) that he claims contains the numbers 12/21/2012 along with dire warnings.

It was so stupid I was actually angry. And trust me, I wanted to be interested, I really did! My birthday is 12/21, and if that is indeed the last day of our lives, I am having a rager. So I need to know if I should really spend my life-savings on a giant hot-tub and 2,000 bottles of Vodka. #thehistorychannel
