The one concept that I haven't really seen addressed here is that in the book since we are seeing everything from the perspective of the psychopathic killer, it is hard to separate what he imagines the woman feels versus what he hopes she feels. Isn't he really an unreliable narrator? I haven't read the book in awhile. I'll have to drag it out again and reread that part.
Also loved the film version of "The Grifters". Never saw "The Getaway" so I can't compare, but the The Grifters was a masterpiece. #violenceagainstwomen
Okay ladies, I have news for you. If the best way you have to communicate romantic interest with your current boyfriend is by yanking out his wang when he least expects it and then flapping it all over your face, you need to rethink the relatuionship, because your current boyfriend is either dead, gay or a dead gay*.

Betty (and the rest of the women in the show) are a Rorschach test aren't they? Some project their hope that these proto-feminists will blossom into someone recognizable. Others think there is nothing there, just a blot. Others see their mothers. I see her with alot of depth (maybe I project that onto her;) because where there is nothing, there is something.
Her music? Enh. She herself? I think she's a blast. (For some reason I might be biased because she is my age and she, too, went to a Catholic high school...a bigger, better, more prestigious one than mine, to boot, but somehow I thought that just made her more interesting.)
How much credit does she get for the videos? For every awesome video, there are shitty ones...I guess now I know that Leighton Meester's video (she's gorgeous, but that video is...bluh) not simply something a producer/director/writer/whatever MADE her do, giving her a limited influence over it?
I mean, realistically, I'm guessing artists have creative control over their videos and want them to sync up with their songs....but my question is how much credit or blame does the actual artist get for the video, beyond starring in it and writing the song to go with it? #ladygagabadromancevideo
@nex0s: Between the Bowie references and her penchant for costumed villiany, I think I can safely say that Lady Gaga is a member of the Guild of Calamitous Intent, though I don't think she's Dr. Mrs. The Monarch. .... if she was, she'd be wearing that butterfly hat that was a Snap Judgment earlier today. #ladygagabadromancevideo
You know what is even grosser than the trailer itself? The fact that this trailer keeps showing up on certain sites devoted to nothing but the objectification of "hot" celebrity women's bodies in the context of "Oh, look at Jessica Alba's bare ass! Isn't she so hot?!" If that isn't the sexualization and glorification of violence against women, I don't know what is. I'm beginning to think that the reaction to the film may be even more telling than the film itself. #violenceagainstwomen
Apparently, the subtext is that fancy vodka makes you wear a colander fashioned of chandelier parts as a hat, while doing a dance that I call The Scratching Kitty.
I plan to do this in front of my Grandma at Thanksgiving.
@BettyCrocker: Yeah, new life goal, being one of her backup dancers, I'd get PAID to do that dance. What if you get to keep the costumes? Imagine the possibilities. #ladygagabadromancevideo
That is complete absolute visual majesty (and the tune ain't bad either). I have loved this woman from the first several bars of Poker Face, and this new one is amazing. Ms Germanotta is fearless in both the visual and musical fields. We should also give credit to collaborator and producer RedOne (Nadir Khayat), the Moroccan/Swedish songwriter/producer/synthesizer maniac who for the past year has been injecting European technopop into the States in the form of all Gaga's hits as well key ones by Sean Kingston and Cascada. The Gaga/RedOne collaboration is almost scary. Who would have thought that 2009 would be a good year for dance music? #ladygagabadromancevideo
Wow - my age is showing. I not only don't hate Betty - I understand her. She could be my mother - although my father wasn't a "Don," my mother was certainly bored and miserable with the slot her tab was supposed to fit into.
She did get happier when she started working when I was in HS but was never really happy with her role.
She's very happy now. She doesn't have to take care of anyone other than herself for the first time in her life . I can't imagine being a prisoner to everyone else's expectations. Aren't you glad we don't have to be? We get to chose. #madmen
@sybann: I concur. I love Betty a lot precisely because she's generationally in between my mother and grandmother. I have aunts-in-law who are exactly her age, and I have heard whispered stories much like what she went through.
Furthermore, I'm sick of people painting her as a bad mother. Instead of being angry with her for that, why not look at the fact that back then getting married pretty much said "you will also have children someday." There was far less in the way of birth control. Just because Betty might've wanted to get married doesn't mean she was ready and interested in also becoming a mother, especially not quite so young. She is suffering from the effects of having no options, and her husband has been a lying, cheating bastard throughout their entire marriage. If she has "flat affect," I think it's pretty freaking understandable! #madmen
@icyblonde: It's part of the reason why I get SO irrationally angry when it's suggested that some of us are "priviledged" and have no clue what it's like to face suffering or hardships. It lacks imagination.
To be truly happy yourself you have to be able to inhabit another's shoes for more than a mile to gauge why they might be angry or abusive or just miserable. You can't just write others off as "jerks." It diminishes both of you.
