I feel like it's sizest of me, but this is one reason I avoid gym rats: I have horrible stereotypes of what kind of men need to be Bigger and Stronger than their girlfriends. Probably for good reason.

You don't make abusive relationships work, you get out of them, and these boys were sending up red flags all over the place. The second you start talking about how you have to show your girlfriend who's in charge here, that's a red flag for partner violence. Maybe it's my professional background, but this whole thing made my stomach hurt. I hope every one of these women leaves, because teaching an abusive man (seriously, I wanted to start checking some of those girls for bruises) how to mouth phrases about how he Respects Women Now so that he can keep his girlfriend is not exactly fixing the problem.

@purpleshoes: Get out of my head. I think the exact same thing - that if a guy is hung up on needing to be bigger/taller/stronger than his girlfriend, then it's probably because he wants to always have the upper hand in the relationship. Even if it's subtle, like "I want to be able to protect her" he's still banking on the fact that his girlfriend will be vulnerable to some dude roughing her up.

I watched this clip and I'll be honest, I have half a mind to write VH-1 and ask them what the fuck they are doing. I lived this kind of relationship for the better part of a decade, and it damaged me and caused me a lot of pain, and so seeing it turned into entertainment is just horrifying.

@cirocco: Holy guacamole, I should've watched the whole episode before I posted, because I'm about 30 seconds into it and I'm dying. Apparently VH1 fooled the guys into going into couples' counseling by telling them they were contestants on a show called "Mr. Awesome." I'm giving each of them two extra douche points for saying yes to that.

I can't even finish watching the damn clip. This show is sickening. Maybe it's so hard to watch because I WAS one of these women. Falling in love with assholes, and wondering what was so wrong with me that they couldn't love me back in the same fashion. And then one day, after being fed up with hating on myself, and after a good long chat w/ a male friend who basically told me, "If you want that guy... go and be by yourself. Learn how to try and happy with yourself. Once you're there, you're going to find the situation has changed and you'll be asking yourself if you truly want to be with him. If you do, then fine, go for it, and I'm sure you'll get him back... but don't ask that question of yourself until you know you're really and truly happy. Happy when you are ALONE."

That did it. I decided to just stop with the douchebag dude and take some time off dating, work on my own life and my own interests until I felt happy again. A short while after that, I met an awesome guy who treats me with the respect, affection, and deep love that I deserve. But, dating a good guy is NOT the cure to disrespecting yourself, make no mistake.

The BF woke up from a nap to catch the tail end of me watching this clip. He has decided to answer every question with "I don't know what to say, I like to party."

This is why I tend to date guys that are into just sports, video games, comic books (and books in general) and some sort of artistic endeavor. And why I never, ever, ever go to the cluuurrrrbbb to look for someone to date. Hell, I never go to the clubs, period. I'm not a dancer. I'll find my guys at the local film fests or comic book shops, honestly. Or work.

Um honestly, these girls obviously deserve better, but if I learned anything from years of Judge Judy, Jerry Springer, Donahue, Geraldo, etc. its that most of these girls will NOT dump these douche bags and they will probably get married or worse pregnant and this never ending cycle of idocracy will continue.

Also, I wish one guy had just said, because you know they were all doing it, that in the preliminary interviews for "Mr. Awesome" they were making up about 80% of the shit to look "cool on TV". See that would have deserved a hug. But no they were all way too big of douche bags to realize how absolutely ridiculous they look.

I would watch this just to make my own husband seem even more awesome. OK, Last night we got into an arguement because I mentioned that I admired Montel Williams (I even uttered the immortal line, "I don't have to defend my liking of Montel Williams to YOU!"), but it was over in five seconds with the agreement that Montel Williams is not for everyone. That's as bad as it gets in our house. These jerks wouldn't last five minutes.

I'm guessing these women were paid to go on the show and it's evident that most of them are at the breaking point, ready to break up if the guy doesn't change drastically. They do see the guys' behavior as being atrocious and they're taking action.

I'm not going to judge the women as being anywhere near the same level with the guys for having stayed with them. I've been lied to and manipulated by men before, though I'm not in those relationships now, I wasn't always the one that ended them. I hate how readily so many commenters blame women for what is done to them.
