Every time I see Wikipedia cited as a reliable source, I'm taken back to that Michael Scott quote: "Wikipedia is the greatest invention ever. Anyone can write an article on any subject. That's how you know you're always getting the best information."
My second-favorite Wikipedia quote is from a fellow journalist who said, "When I see 'Source: Wikipedia' I assign the same credibility to the information as 'Source: some guy I know.'"
I just love diagnosing people with pathological disorders by reading their Wikipedia pages. After all, those pages are written by people who have examined them, not by random member of the public.
Some of these 'allegeds' depend that you accept on unstated evidence some guy's dismissal of her claims. Gee, maybe she asked for it, you know? She's blue collar, not college educated, and she got dinged by the press early on for being trailer park and trashy. Who ever gave her a chance? She fucked up once that we know of, is it okay to nail her forever after that?
@Ginmar Rienne: And the police didn't believe that men attacked her? Not a smoking gun, either. Also, this is all from Wikipedia. Lots of members of the public hate her. It's hardly a reliable source.
@HanaMaru: The police have plenty of anti-woman problems, probably worse than ordinary civilian guys. Sounds like they treated her unsympathetically and with bias. If people are citing the Wiki article as proof she's weird and fucked up, then they can't argue that it's not okay to point out the language against her in that article, too. It's so passive. It's so easy to lump all her complaints into a more polite version of 'crazy bitch.' I just don't see her getting a fair shake, or the rehab that people were so eager to give males who did worse.
@Ginmar Rienne: Yes. And this article is incredibly slanted. I can't believe on top of it all, it's citing the accused rapist's objections to establish her cred as a crazy liar, as you pointed out above. It's incredibly anti-feminist.
@Hiroine Protagonist: I think more like borderline personality disorder. She has a true gift for screwing herself over like with the laces on her skates. Of course any diagnosis would have to be tempered by information about her drug and alcohol use.
Yes, her stories do sound implausible and are most likely untrue... but this post makes me a little uncomfortable, as it makes fun of someone for reporting attacks. Whether or not we think she's a crazy person and whether or not she's a celebrity(ish), this kind of post doesn't seem to fit a feminist website.
@TheJessie: I was thinking maybe a little histrionic PD...lots of lies for attention and embellishments and ADAMANTLY sticking to them, no matter how fantastic they get.
Ok, just watched the whole thing. She was absolutely abused by her mother and her ex-husband, but I think she knew about the attack way before she said she did (likely beforehand). But then again, I also think she was a battered wife and so I don't know what her mental state was to resist her ex-husband at that time.
I wish her best, though. I just didn't truly believe her story. But her mother...whoa, that lady blows.
I guess it behooves her to keep lying about the Kerrigan incident and talking about it keeps her in the public eye but it irks me that she was this amazing skater and let it all go to waste. Also, from some of those calls to 911 it sounds like she might be on some mind-altering substance. Sad.
I must admit that I rooted for Tonya, even after the attack on Kerrigan. I just never believed any of it. I always thought that Nancy must have had some idea due to her very telegenic 'Why? Wjy?' That's impossible but it was 1994. Tonya was a good skater and it turned out that Kerrigan WAS a bitch. I've always wished Tonya would straighten herself out but it looks like that will never happen.
@topsy: Nancy Kerrigan being caught on tape making bitchy comments to Mickey Mouse during an appearance was hilarious. Kerrigan vs. The Happiest Place on Earth made for great television.
I'll admit I always had a soft spot for Tonya Harding.
During that whole mess, her story - the mother who looked like a prison warden, the creepy husband with a cop mustache who sold their wedding night tape, the background that people felt comfortable calling "trailer trash", & the body (& athletic style) that did not conform to the lithe fairy princesses that typically populate her sport - was kind of affecting, especially when she was compared to Nancy Kerrigan, who was basically Perfect Figure Skater straight from Central Casting.
@Your Screenplay Sucks: Yeah...I'm with you up until the point where I start considering how much sympathy she would get if she was a Black girl from the projects.
@MizJenkins: Sometimes when people try to pull the "it's not race, it's class" card, I feel like "oh puhleez" because obviously race matters and we all know it.
That said, I do think this is a sport where class is the important thing. Rich people generally have higher education and are therefore less likely to be racist (sorry that I'm generalizing here but I do think that racism comes with a certain lack of education); however, please don't put them in the room with someone from a trailer park.
I guess what I'm trying to say that is that, in the world of figure skating, had Tonya Harding been a tall, lithe black girl from a wealthy family, she would have been better off than she was as herself.
@Birthday Girl: "Rich people generally have higher education and are therefore less likely to be racist (sorry that I'm generalizing here but I do think that racism comes with a certain lack of education)"
Actually, I have found that people from those backgrounds seem to hold the most prejudiced and racist beliefs/ideologies. This is because they are mostly monoracial groups that are extremely insular and noninclusive. It has nothing to do with education and everything to do with socialization. What you said bothered me and I just had to say something. I've been surrounded by these upper class people most of my life and let me tell you some of them are the most ignorant/racist/prejudiced douchebags with high level degrees that you will ever meet.

I disagree. I have found that wealthy people are more likely to hold prejudiced/biased/racist ideologies because they are mostly insular, monoracial, and noninclusive groups. It has nothing to do with education and everything to do with socialization. I speak from personal experience as a minority who has been surrounded by these upper class d-bags in every aspect of my life: school, volunteering, university, etc. I have met some of the most racist and bigoted wealthy douchebags with high level degrees than you will ever imagine. So, I kindly and most definitely disagree with you.
She sounds mentally ill to me. I remember watching her back in the day and yes, she was a talented skater. Plus, if my name were Gillooly, I'd sure as shit change it to something else too! Good thing Tanya wasn't named Julie...
I always wonder why people who "just want to move on" insist on further humiliation in the media when they could just, go to school to be a dental assistant, or something.
@TheLittlestChicken: the people being interviewed always want to get past it and yet they know...they know that 99% of the reason they are being interviewed in the first place is for the incident that everyone needs to "get past".
