Oral Roberts is dead. This is the same guy who, in the 1980s, announced to a television audience that unless he raised $8 million by that March, God would "call him home." Guess he finally did.
Article about what happens when servicewomen want to get an abortion - have to pay for it themselves, can't get it done at an army hospital, etc. Sad stuff.
Has anyone seen this story about a teacher who cut off a 7 yo girl's braid in front of her whole class because she was 'playing with it too loud'???
I think I would LOSE MY SHIT if someone did that to my daughter.
The teacher was fined $175, but still has her job. I don't know if she should! [www.wisn.com]
@SomeAuthorGirl: With regard to this, anyone else who is in IT knows that 9 times out of 10 (or greater) nothing is ever gone-gone. It might look gone, and it might be expensive and time consuming to find it, but trust: it isn't fucking gone.
As a nerd and as a political junkie, I am dying to know what the fuck is in there. Not that we'll ever know. But, ya know.
It's the story of a woman who gave her child up for adoption, and the damage it wrought on her life to do so. I knew it was difficult to give a child up for adoption, but I had no idea how difficult, and I am sure I'm not alone. I'd love to see someone do a thoughtful, in-depth piece on the subject and raise a bit of awareness.
Love this! However, I'd like to mention to ABC News (first tip) that altering your appearance to more closely resemble the privileged class isn't really "combatting the prejudice."
I hope we talk about The Blind Side soon. From the trailer, it looks like a gross Nice-White-Lady Trope that could be incredibly offensive, but NYT is saying is has genuine heart: [movies.nytimes.com]
@judgingamy:
Yes, I know! I saw the trailer, and was like, "Really Hollywood? Another white savior movie?!" And then I heard it was the top-grossing movie over the weekend.
@thesciencegirl wields the truth like a mighty axe.: It's also a true (well at least based on true events story) which I think slightly negates the white savior part of it. It did happen, it wasn't another movie trying to say look at the nice white people helping the poor black person.
@duetoprivacy: I think, true story or not, it's interesting which narratives are chosen for films over and over again. I also think it's interesting that this movie appears to have been made from the white POV; I haven't seen it, but if it's set up the way the trailer makes it appear, the white woman's (Sandra Bullock) life is introduced, and then this black kid becomes a part of it; she is really the central character and the hero. She is the subject and he is the object. It doesn't really seem like it's his story. And why is that? Because he serves as a prop to show her altruism. But shouldn't he be the hero of his own life? But i don't know... maybe Sandra Bullock figured so centrally in the trailer b/c she is a huge star.
"Ann Hornaday of Washington Post gave a positive review of the film writing: "There's been something off-putting about the ad campaign for "The Blind Side," a drama about a white woman who adopts an African American high school student, from trailers trafficking in nearly every troubling African American stereotype in movies (from the Magical Negro to the surly low-level bureaucrat), to posters featuring the patronizing image of Sandra Bullock gently leading her looming, gentle giant of a son down a football field. It turns out that "The Blind Side" is much better than its ads..."
The director of America the Beautiful (you guys reviewed the movie in 08 I think) has organized a Ralph Lauren boycott and gained enough momentum that the RL exects are actually meeting with him today to try to stop it. He's built up almost 7,000 fans on this facebook page in less than a week. CNN has been committing then flaking out of covering it because, get this, they can't find anyone to balance a segment by disagreeing with the director's point that RL's photoshopped ads hurt women.
