I know this is an oft-repeated trope in TV/fiction/movies, but I've been watching V and given the previews for next week's episode, it looks like "The REAL reason the V's are here!!!11!1!!!!!1!" has something to do with pregnant women (although I could be making that up, since I haven't seen the episode. I know there's an original "V" but I don't want to read about its plot because I like the new one and don't want to be spoiled). A big part of Lost also hinges on the reproductive (in)capability of women in "strange" lands. I'm sure there are other examples.
The point being, in spite of a lot of new TV and other media having strong female characters (and may I point to Erica and Juliet, from V and Lost respectively, both played by Elizabeth Mitchell), the core motivation, the underlying cause of the conflict between either the Others and the Losties, or the V's and the Humans, seems to be about reproduction. It's about whose women can procreate, and the idea that only one group can do it at a time, and the conflict is that Group A has to make sure Group B is subjugated, enslaved, or annihilated in order for Group A to survive.
ANYWAY. I've had some wine, and I like the sound of my own internet voice, and I'm sure someone smarter than me has already parsed this shit - hell, Jez may have. But yet the trope still has currency, and a smarter feminist's take on that would be rad, as I'm (a) still a neophyte and (b) too buzzed to think it through to a conclusion myself.
It ain't easy to translate the sheer awesomeness of being a super-zexy fembot in a male locker room to the pages of a magazine!
The longing glances; the imminent circle jerks; the poorly coordinated uniforms. Might as well call in a supermodel and star photog to shoot it all up right, right?
#theblindside#sandrabullock anyone else notice how incredibly racist the trailer for this movie is? Angelic white lady rescues black kid from certain poverty, all other black people in trailer are hostile assholes rooting for the kid to fail.
@lisas: That's been bothering me, but I don't know enough about it to go into full rage. Have you seen the movie? I'm wondering whether it being "true" justifies what seems to be a blatantly racist depiction of the events.
@Habibiti: No, haven't seen the movie. Just reacting to the trailer, in that the trailer itself is racist. Unlikely that I'd see the movie anyway, I saw the trailer before Where the Wild Things Are.

I love that Sarah Palin's book is technically already half-off.
