<![CDATA[ Jennifer Lopez On The Twins: "They're Going To Love Everybody More Than Me!" ]]>
  • A very interesting interview with Jennifer Lopez reveals that she does not breast-feed, had a nervous breakdown after the birth of her kids and she's sort of into Scientology. And she sounds like a control freak. Then there's this quote: "At the tenth day after giving birth all that chemical stuff did peak—that hormone thing—and I did cry a lot that day because I was having so much trouble moving. I couldn’t get up fast enough to feed the babies…Marc was helping out a lot and I was crying and crying and going, 'Oh, Papi...they’re going to know everybody more than me…They're going to love everybody more than me!'" In astrology terms, that means she was born in the sign of Virgo, her rising sign is a Virgo, and her moon sign is a Virgo. Well, our experts say that isn't possible if Zoe is 37 and was born on Sept. 1, 1971, as she claims. In fact, says our pro, she'd actually be five to 10 years older than that if she were indeed a Triple-V." [NY Daily News, Perez Hilton]

[LA Times]

<![CDATA[ SNL: "I Believe Marriage Is Meant To Be A Sacred Institution Between Two Unwilling Teenagers" ]]> I can't think of a better way to start the morning than to post the amazing SNL debate skit from last night. Tina Fey is scarily good, as always, and the lovely Queen Latifah gives a hilarious performance as befuddled moderator, Gwen Ifill, who tries desperately to make sense out of Sarah Palin's circle-talk. I haven't laughed this hard at SNL in a long time. Long live Tina Fey.

<![CDATA[ Sarah Palin Is More Than A Little Confused About, Well, Everything ]]> With the first Presidential debates and a week of Pali-blunders under our collective belts, it was time to breathe easy and have a few drinks this weekend in honor of Maureen Dowd having been kicked off the "Straight" Talk Express for talking less straight than either John McCain or Sarah Palin. But then there were polls! Rumors of a new October surprise that could keep Bush from bombing another country! And a trip to Geno's in Philly, even though everyone knows Pat's is the place to be because Geno's is biased against non-English speakers (but, presumably, Germans and Italians would get a pass). Luckily, my friend Kay Steiger, who blogs for Campus Progress, is here to help me parse all that and appreciate the occasional reference to Britney Spears.

MEGAN: Good morning! Was your Saturday night as "opulent" as McCain's? I mean, I know eating on the road sucks, but it doesn't seem like he had to come all the way back to D.C. after the debates to eat at a good hotel restaurant.

KAY: I know. This sort of puts Obama's claim about a Katrina-like response. I think what Obama meant was McCain's Katrina response. You know, when he and Bush were having a birthday party.

MEGAN: "Let them eat cake?" Oh, wait, that was Barbara Bush, never mind. I also love that he flew all the way back here after the debate to hang out in his Congressional office and call people, but that he couldn't be bothered to walk down to the Senate floor to vote on a spending bill that contained earmarks. I think he really has turned into a complete wuss. He didn't want to be seen voting for earmarks, nor voting against a spending bill that contained offshore drilling provisions, so he just went to dinner 5 minutes away.

KAY: Seems like a good use of time. Maybe he played some craps while he was at it —with the $700 billion bailout money.

MEGAN: I mean, who doesn't like a good Indian casino? Not McCain, that's for sure. Although, I'm just putting this out there, I haven't been in a casino yet, Indian or otherwise, that didn't make me grind my teeth. I don't think an alcoholic beverage should cost me $8 in the middle of nowhere in Connecticut.

KAY: Yeah, casinos tend to be filled with a lot of sad old people. I guess that includes McCain.

MEGAN: A lot of sad old people that aren't nearly drunk enough to be entertaining because they can't afford $6 beers and quarter slots at the same time. Sorry, I digress. I really, really hate casinos.

KAY: Don't worry, me too. In any case, we should probably say something about how McCain's debate performance on Friday was a big FAIL.

MEGAN: Oh, yeah, there's all kinds of evidence that he didn't play well with the crowds. I personally think it was because most Americans tuned out — figuratively or literally — once the discussion turned to foreign policy, so that most of them missed the preconditions/preparation debacle.

KAY: Well, it's easy to misspeak. McCain said we were at an "existential" crisis with Iran. I'm not even sure what that means. Did he just take freshman philosophy?

MEGAN: I know, I thought the same thing! But then I realized that he just meant that he thought Iran would be a threat to the existence of Israel, i.e., nuke it, and I wondered why the McCain camp is so obsessed with nuclear war and yet its Vice Presidential candidate can't correctly identify the purpose of the Bush Doctrine, which is to allow us to nuke people without provocation.

KAY: Well, if we're going to put nuclear war on the table we want to make sure we have at least one person "a heartbeat away" who has no clue about foreign policy

MEGAN: I mean, right? Palin's so bad even McCain's staffers are telling reporters that she's "clueless". And Jack Cafferty — no bastion of liberalism — had this to say:

"If John McCain wins this woman will be one 72-year-old's heartbeat away from being President of the United States. And if that doesn't scare the hell out of you, it should."

KAY: I know, even the right isn't so sure about her anymore. But at least we have Tina Fey to make us laugh. The thing is, those sketches are getting less funny the more true they are. I feel like this sketch was eerily similar to Palin's actual answer about the bailout.

MEGAN: I really thought some of what Tina Fey said early on was a direct quote, but I'd been drinking for 11 and a half hours at that point. I did find it uproariously funny.

KAY: It's always prudent to drink for 11 and a half hours.

MEGAN: It was a wedding! I was less amused at the part where she agreed with Obama on Pakistan and then McCain retracted it for her, though. Well, that and that she went to Geno's instead of Pat's. Geno's is the cheesesteak place with the signs requiring that you order in English.

KAY: Don't worry, I think the "October surprise" this year is going to be Bristol's wedding.

MEGAN: Well, it can't be that much of a surprise if we're already talking about it. Also, the thought of Steve Schmidt and Rick Davis dreamily talking about how marrying off Bristol Palin on her 18th birthday (it is a Saturday, after all!) is sort of incredibly creepy. Especially as a way to have the first-ever pre-election wedding in history. That's just, like, ewww.

KAY: So ewww. Well, we all know that you're not a real woman until you're married, right?

MEGAN: Well, you become a woman when you start bleeding out your cooch but only a real woman when you lock a man down to it for life or until the inevitable, painful and public divorce. I'm so glad that I'm not a girl and not yet a woman. And yes, I did just make a Britney reference. Seemed appropriate.

KAY: So appropriate.

<![CDATA[ Tina Fey As Sarah Palin: "Katie, I'd Like To Use One Of My Life Lines" ]]> Can you really parody something that's already a joke? Well, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler tried their darndest to parody the Katie Couric interview of Sarah Palin on last night's SNL, and they didn't need to stray particularly far from the original source material to create some cringeworthy laughs. Like Palin thinking she was on Who Wants To Be a Millionaire and saying in response to a Couric question, "I'd like to phone a friend!" Clip above.

<![CDATA[ Will You Buy What Tina Fey Is Selling? ]]> It's rare that you read a celebrity salary report and think "good for you Audrina, you totally deserve to be making millions and living in a three bedroom Tuscan-style villa in the Hollywood Hills." But that's exactly how we felt while reading Portfolio's analysis of the mounds of cash Tina Fey is raking in these days. And not just for herself. Since her show 30 Rock won seven high-profile Emmys this past weekend, Fey's value to NBC "has jumped significantly," according to Steve Rossman, who leads the branded entertainment practice at advertising agency R.P.A. "She is becoming a brand unto herself."

Portfolio estimates that Fey has earned at least $17 million in her career so far, and predicts there will be "tens of millions — if not hundreds of millions" in her future. In addition to money from her years as head writer on Saturday Night Live, her films Mean Girls and Baby Mama, and 30 Rock, the new Fey brand is bolstered by new advertising deals and her resemblance to a certain vice presidential nominee. It is estimated that Fey earned about $1 million for her American Express ads with Martin Scorsese and her appearance as Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live two weeks ago has also proven to be profitable: The much-hyped opening skit gave SNL its best season premiere numbers in seven years.

Though you may not care that NBC found a cash cow in Tina Fey, it's very good news for fans of 30 Rock because it ensures our favorite geeky girl a place on their lineup, even though the show's ratings still aren't fantastic. 30 Rock only averaged 6.5 million viewers last season, but it is still considered a hit by NBC because its young and affluent audience is attractive to advertisers and NBC executives have said publicly that the show's popularity on DVD and online downloads are valuable to the future of the company.

The Portfolio article speculates that there may be a limit to Tina Fey's brand appeal, raising the question, "Is anyone going to buy a Tina Fey fragrance?" As Fey-natics, we may be the wrong people to ask, but we could definitely see Tina marketing her own line of "Tina Fey spectacles" and would rather find Ms. Fey's Frozen "Sandwich Day" Sandwiches on the shelf next to our Hot Pockets than anything with Rachael Ray's face on the box.

<![CDATA[ Why Tina Fey's Self-Deprecation Is Good For Women ]]> Fellow Tina Fey-natic blogger Kate Harding has a quibble with the Emmy-winning 30 Rock star. It bugs her that Tina Fey makes fun of her own looks in her comedy. "Even if she thinks of herself as a geeky underdog," Harding writes, "these days, the woman is fucking conventionally gorgeous. Whenever there’s a crack about her looks on 30 Rock, I’m torn between being sad that she apparently doesn’t see that in herself and being pissed off that she’s reinforcing the idea that having brown hair, glasses, and a figure that’s maybe a size 2 instead of a 0 actually equals ugly."

I think Harding is entirely missing the point here. First of all, the person who most makes fun of Liz Lemon's appearance is her blowhard boss, Alec Baldwin's Jack Donaghy. You know, the same man who said, in response to Lemon's declaration that she had $12,000 in her checking account, "What are you, an immigrant?" The idea here is that when Jack Donaghy rags on Liz Lemon, you're supposed to think, "Jack Donaghy's a LOLworthy asshole," rather than "Liz Lemon is a total heifer."

Secondly, Tina Fey isn't conventionally gorgeous. I'm not going to argue here about her specific clothing size or her precise level of attractiveness, but come on. "Conventionally gorgeous" in America these days is Heidi Klum. Perhaps Tina Fey is an idealized version of a "real" woman, but she is 99% more "real" than most other women we see on TV. Thirdly, while Fey's character is portrayed as a nerd, she's also portrayed as someone with an amazing career that many, many women would die to have. It's not like she's some pathetic creature; her "geeky underdog-ness" is generally shown in flashbacks from her childhood and adolescence. I don't see how Fey's occasional self-deprecation is reinforcing the idea to anyone that being bigger than a size 2 is "ugly." There's more! When Liz Lemon falls into the common tropes of single womanhood (choking on a TV dinner in her kitchenette), it's supposed to be parodying precisely the kinds of media that reinforce ideas that unconventional women are unworthy (see Liz Lemon drinking wine while running on a treadmill and MILF Island for further reference).

Harding also writes, "No one likes an egomaniac, but frankly, no one likes self-loathing people, either," but Fey's self-deprecation — "self-loathing" is way too strong a word — is precisely what makes her relatable. In an ideal world, yes, we'd all feel just dandy about ourselves and greet each day with animated canaries perched on our shoulders. But most women? We have many moments of self-doubt, and seeing someone as successful as Tina Fey be self-deprecating gives us all permission to be imperfect. Also, it's damned funny. Having a completely well-adjusted television mogul as a main character? That sounds boring as fuck.

30 Rock is a comedy, which is not to excuse comedy from having a conscience, but expecting it to tow the line of extreme P.C. body image standards is barking up the wrong tree. 30 Rock is a damned sight better than most shows on television in showing women with "real" bodies and addressing body image issues, like when Jane Krakowski's character, Jenna, gains weight and Jack Donaghy says, "She needs to lose thirty pounds or gain sixty. Anything in between has no place on television." With lines like those, Fey incites a jumping off point for discussion, and isn't that what the best television should do?

<![CDATA[ Wigging Out ]]> The New York Times had wigs on the brain today. In addition to an obit for Nina Lawson, who headed the wig department at the Metropolitan Opera for over 30 years, the paper ran a piece on the wig artistry that went into Tina Fey's uncannily realistic Sarah Palin pompadour for Saturday's SNL. Lawson, who got her start braiding horses' tails on her father's Scottish farm, arrived at the Met in 1958 and went on to craft and care for elaborate hairpieces for everyone from Maria Callas to Pavarotti. Her level of skill is manifest when you consider the work that went into the one pseudo-Palin coif, which the designer describes as a “French twist with a ’60s bouffant kind of thing, and bangs." In addition, "It’s darker at the nape of the neck, and shows transitions to a lot of different colors." Whether the SNL team, like Lawson, had to clean every hair of the wig individually with Borax is not addressed. [New York Times]
