I do so agree with Carmen's wise words about not getting into debt just to dress a certain way. Being raised by someone whose own family lost everything during the Great Depression and then went through rationing during the war years, I have never understood the, to me, somewhat decadent attitude of I must buy a garment even though I cannot really afford to pay for it and I will only wear it the once anyway. If the worst thing that can happen to people during the current recession is that they cannot afford to update their wardrobe, they will be very fortunate indeed.
Those quotes are impressive. Very wise lady. And it's incredible how she managed to keep in a profession that gets so difficult after you hit 25 or so. Kudos to her!
Wow, she is handling the Madoff disaster with so much more grace and aplomb than Alexandra Penny aka writer of the Bag Lady Papers. I certainly can't blame Penny for being bitter and feeling defeated, but it's nice to hear another perspective which seems to acknowledge the depth of the economic crisis and take a little more personal responsibility. (Sorry, Alexandra Penny, I don't mean to make an unfair example of you, but there it is).
@megscissorhands: I agree. I had a hard time reading Penny's blog about Madoff. On one hand, I respect her for her hard work, being a completely self-made woman, and I feel bad that she lost all of her money. On the other hand, I thought her comments about having to take the subway and oh my G-d, how will my shirts get ironed without the help?!?! to be a little tone-deaf.
@Sputnik_Sweetheart: word. I would have been more inclined to listen to the stories about her coupon being declined at Domino's and whatall, if she had seemed a tad less lofty through it all.
@bowleserised: My mom used that on everything when I was growing up. Little did I know it was a fashionista beauty secret as she was slathering it on my sunburned nose!
@somnambulent: Seriously? I love Weekend Edition on Sunday mornings. My boyfriend and I loll around in bed until we've heard Will Shortz and Liane Hansen toss around the puzzler and only then do we feel we can get up and start our day.
@somnambulent: Piling on - love your Mom! When she's not on Sunday I am not a happy camper. I only wish I did radio as fabulous. Commercial rock unfortunately.
@linnyt is a walking cliché: envy and greed has put our nation where it is...the moment EVERYONE stops envying and wanting to covet the possessions of others is the moment where the continuing increase in debt ceases
I don't want what you own because everything I have is inside myself and that is something only I can possess
Carmen is one of the most gorgeous and gracious women of all times. I've been seeing pics of her since I was a little girl. She is the living embodiment of the saying fly until the day I die She has that classy otherworldly aura which women like Jackie o and Audrey Hepburn had..
@CHIC NOIR: She really is phenomenal. She really ought to start writing her memoirs ASAP! Imagine all the amazing people she's met, the lives she's lived.
