Between the First Lady, Desiree Rodgers, and Melody Barnes, the White House is going to start looking like a nice place to stand for folks who want to hang out with attractive black women. If he hires Melissa Harris-Lacewell, I may have to reconsider my living arrangements.

This was my job on an obviously much less important scale for a Museum in LA. It's FUCKING HARD WORK. (That said, I shall not feign modesty: I was damn good at it. :-)) It's a lot of fun and stress, and I wish her luck! Hope she knows what she's in for: if you don't have the personality/appropriate skills for this kind of work, all the MBAs in the world can't help you, no matter where they are from.

Also, not a little disturbed that people are focusing more on how pretty she is than on her MBA...

@yellow_dog: I think it kind of diminishes her accomplishments a bit. Benign may be a better term than harmless, and I agree, this isn't the most dire issue we face, even as feminists, but I'd like to see the dialogue re women in power evolve past "And she looks so pretty doing it!" I think you see that a LOT more when discussing women than men.

I just get a little uncomfortable when that's all that's being focused on when it COULD be astute political commentary. I'm not bitching about the fact that paparazzi photos of Gwen Stefani are beside incredible socio-political coverage. That's the beauty of the site.

Over and over, Obama warms my heart with the people he's choosing to staff his administration. I hope that Rogers can play a role in making the White House much more transparent and open.

Krugman says it best: Seriously, isn't it amazing just how impressive the people being named to key positions in the Obama administration seem? Bye-bye hacks and cronies, hello people who actually know what they're doing. For a bunch of people who were written off as a permanent minority four years ago, the Democrats look remarkably like the natural governing party these days, with a deep bench of talent.

Her job sounds waaaay to stressful for this library lover. My sister had a low maintenance wedding that consisted of a maybe 100 people tops and THAT was bitch to organize. I can't imagine all the checking, rechecking, and checking again that Rogers will have to do. She must have a mad Type A personality to be so on the ball.

@ceejeemcbeegee: That's what I meant by Type A personality. I have a friend who's just like that- she LOVES to organize and plan. It's more fun for her than actually going to a party. She's an organizing machine! And (not sure if it sounded like I did but) I don't think there's anything weird or negative about that.

It's a pretty cool position.

I'm loving how diverse the various administration position appointments seem to be. And unlike with W, it doesn't feel deliberate -- "I will now select a woman to fill my quota, followed by an ethnic individual."
