I made the mistake of reading the comments on the Washington Post article. I almost started hyperventilating, but it is important to face the fact that many people apparently thought he deserved to die and that I share a country with such people.

I am arguing on a baseball messageboard of all places about Tiller and late term abortions. I swear, if one more poster over there insinuates that women that have late term abortions are monsters out to kill babies, I will LOSE IT.

Here's an idea: pro-lifers should really switch from celebrating birthdays to celebrating "conception days". Cuz life begins at conception, right? Celebrating a birthday is only observing the inconsequential event of the fully-formed child leaving the womb. Instead, they should mark the day that child was actually *created*.
Can't you see this happening?

I am "stunned" at such a senseless killing. I wonder how come so few pro-lifers do not adopt more, or foster some of the millions of kids that are in the system. Many of these children born and unwanted by parents, or immediate family members. These children are shuffled into the system unloved, and unwanted, and unleashed at eighteen to the world.

Shame on you pro-lifers!!

@angryblackgurl: "Funny" thing is: the abortions Dr. Tiller performed were mostly wanted pregnancies that went terribly wrong. I'd like to start walking around with graphic signs showing anecephaly babies, or gory pictures of women who died in childbirth, to shove in these anti-choicers' faces.

I'm terribly angry. I fear we cannot rely upon the law to protect women's rights. Dammit, abortion is LEGAL.

What's troubling is the groundswell of anti-abortion sentiment in younger populations. Contrary to what seem to be prevailing expectations that we become more "socially liberal" with each generation, America has been leaning more towards more restrictive interpretations of abortion rights. This is a culture war in the process of being won by gun-wielding maniacs and patriarchal moralists under the guise of "saving lives."

When Democrats get angry over losing an election, they pretend they'll move to Canada. When this suspect gets angry, well, right.

There's just so much anger in this country, so much resentment, and it's fueled by absolutist views of right and wrong and it's fueled by late-night AM radio hosts, and it burns and it burns until something horrible happens. The horror of being murdered in what you and your family consider to be a holy place is just unspeakable.

Grief is just pooling around my heart right now.

Sometimes, how nakedly they hate us, is just so visible. Yesterday I felt tired, and terrified. Today I am angry. Women deserve access to legal health care, and I am reinvigorated to do my part.

@SunburnedCounsel: I'm still tired, but also angry. I've been in red states all my life, and my job prohibits me from actively fighting this like I would like. But I am considering a donation to an abortion rights group. And I have a feeling I'm going to get even angrier than usual when I see the "Choose Life" plates that dominate my part of the country. Even though the vast majority of pro-lifers aren't murderers.

Color me crazy but a guy on my facebook just posted the following status:

"The women's clinic he ran is one of three in the nation where abortions are performed after the 21st week of pregnancy, when the fetus is considered viable.."

As if this somehow justifies the murdering of this brave man. As if see folks he was a vile man anyway.

Me and the guy who posted the comment are in a heated debate right now. I am still furious over this senseless death.

Also the last survivor of the Titanic died today :-(

@Jezemale*: Please point out to him that "late-term" abortions are almost never done because a woman doesn't want the baby, but because of catastrophic and tragic medical complications. (In my opinion, for this reason, they should really be less controversial than abortions performed in the first trimester.)
