From the article, which is v interesting and you all should read it before you post: According to the stylist, Palin never stepped into a store herself. The stylist was hired the day before two holiday weekends and taken on a press junket. Since there was no time, she had to pay retail, work literally all weekend with very little sleep, and outfit the entire family at the alst minute. Part of the $150k is for hiring the stylist for 3 24 hour days over a holiday weekend, twice. She was tailoring clothes and putting them on the kids mere hours before they had to be on stage.

The stylist didn't even know how much the total costs were, as she didn't pay in cash. The stores in the cities the press events were held at ran a tab and an RNC drone came in to pay later.

Blame the RNC for its poor planning. You want it good and you want it fast? It isn't going to be cheap.

I dislike Sarah Palin a lot and think pretty much everything she says is a lie or is a half-truth...but, it was always clear to me that she didn't ask for this "makeover." Newsweek did this whole article about it right after the election last year and essentially said that it wasn't her fault, that it was the McCain campaign/RNC's doing. So far no one has really provided any evidence to the contrary. To me, she's innocent of these charges. Sarah has a lot of reasons to dislike her, we don't have to make any up.

Whoa whoa whoa- I can't speak for for everybody else but this is never how I perceived this issue. I have never thought of the Palins as white trash or hillbillies. On the contrary I've always thought of them as the same rich white political family that you always see except they tried to "play poor" in a pathetic attempt to connect with the hillbilly demographic since "we're just like you" which of course ended up working. The Pains may not be old money but they are hardly country bumpkins. I would love for someone to tell me how much Sarah Palin was paying for suits before the election or even now. I would bet that there isn't much of a price difference at all.

@IamnotStarJones: I think I mentioned somewhere up there that the Palins are not old money (which is what I consider the Kennedys and the Bushes, et al). But that doesn't mean that they embarked on the campaign trail and were suddenly all "So this is a department store! I've been buying all my clothes from Wal-Mart!" In terms of how their standard of living changed from before her VP nom to after I'm willing to bet there is little difference beyond the fact that she now gets followed by media cameras.

There are plenty of people here that wear clothing from Barney's, Sacks, and Neiman Marcus. I mean you must be stylish while riding on the back of an ATV during deer season. Personally I think a Burberry coat is the best when I'm going to be in a tree stand all day.

It has always been this way, though. The sophisticates get indignant whenever a naive person acquires their precious things. Some people need to feel like they are better than others in some way.

Though not a huge deal to me personally, did the stylist have to go to Saks and Barneys for everything? Wasn't Talbots, or even Ann Taylor open for these last minute purchases? Why not shoes from 9 West and suits from Todays Man?

To me, this was actually the least important "misstep" of Palin's campaign. The emphasis on clothing choices of female politicians highlights the different treatment of male and female politicians by the public and the media.

@Zira: I do agree with you completely about the Newsweek cover, and I think that most Jezebelles concur. My person belief, however, is that Newsweek knew the amount of attention that sexist cover would receive about that very topic. Apparently sex(ism) sells.

@sanyucat: Well, yes and no. As I recall, some news sources reported about the price of Palin's hair and makeup stylist, and that the top salary went to the hair stylist. There was certainly some critical attention about her beauty maintenance in general.

@Zira: I've been hearing this argument, and I have a problem with it. Assuming the photo isn't photoshopped, Palin posed for that photo. She made the decision to dress like that and stand like that - and that's fine, its her choice. But once photos are taken, they're out in the world forever. Calling a publication sexist for running a photo she participated in the creation of makes no sense to me at all.

Apparently Palin posed in those short short running shorts for the cover of some health magazine for long distance runners. The advertising agency that took the photo breached Palin's contract by selling it to Newsweek. Palin could sue Newsweek and the ad agency for this and I hope she does.
