I wrote for the school newspaper and I too aspired to be a journo and eventually go to J-School but thankfully, it became clear to me by way of Gawker that journalism wasn't a viable option.
So now I'm trying acting, something even less competitive.
I do feel quite bad for the EIC of my school's rag who went on to J-School. He was the only person I truly enjoyed being around in school and now I pray to Jesus he changes his major.
What is it with all these young'uns in school freaking the fuck out over the economy? I have met more frantic, on-edge 19 year olds in the past 4 months than ever. You aren't even applying for jobs yet. Seriously, you have a few years. You will figure it out. Chill out and do well in your classes and leave the anxiety to those of us that are actually in the job market.
@R_Claw...v.2.01 now comes with hope for the future.: kind of, but it's mostly from the statistical stuff i learned in my major. i haven't found anyone to pay me to draw oligopoly graphs all day...but my fingers are crossed.
@R_Claw...v.2.01 now comes with hope for the future.: I keep trying to explain this to my boyfriend's mother and the rest of his family. I am an anthropology major, (hopefully) graduating in the Spring and I do not intend to do anything with my anthro knowledge after graduation. They didn't attend college, so maybe this is the issue- my parents are both post bachelor's degree holders and they know what's up (My dad majored in Philosophy as an undergrad) Anyway, it irks me to no end!
@R_Claw...v.2.01 now comes with hope for the future.: Majored in Business and Philosophy. I have been working as an analyst for an investment firm. Congratulate me, though. I gave notice today. I took a job as a research analyst for the major university in tow. 75% off of tuition. Masters here I come! Of course I plan to study anything other than Business or Philosophy
@R_Claw...v.2.01 now comes with hope for the future.: me! But I'm super lucky. Majored in English, and I write for a publishing house. Surprisngly I know several people who are still in the field they studied, and I'm years out of college.
@YoYoMa'am: Most of the people I know who have well-paid jobs grew up in poor families (new immigrants etc, not poor-by-choice types like artists) and I absolutely respect that they want to feel financially secure all the time and that they want something to pass on to their kids (as their parents don't have anything to pass on to them).
Ah, to be young, sheltered, and hopeful. Dude, I would kill for a job right now. Any job. Cubicle or not. And my $200k education ain't doing shit to get me one.
Dude, Adam. By the time our generation is really in the workforce I am sure journalism will be less cubicle and more sitting on your couch with a laptop.
What is with all of these people having this cuckoo bananas notion that being a journalist is this glamorous lifestyle that will finance a sexytime lifestyle? My mother wrote for a major metropolitan newspaper in the 80's and we still struggled big time, and she was sort of kickass, journalist-wise. She worked her ass off and she loved her job, but the chances of straight up journalism EVER being a fiscally attractive career, even in the best of economies, is slim.
Same, my mother was a BIG DEAL in journalism, and we were always poorer than my friends. Even if my mom had more prestige or power, she made f'ing peanuts.
@Jessica Hussein Lovejoy loves Decapitatey Wayne Peterson: And, he needs to get over himself "I know that I could amount to other, bigger things [in journalism] if I wanted to, but my passion now is politics," being on a reality show of MTV is not quite the honor it used to be (see Rock of Love: 3).
@union lizard: If you read the whole interview, he really sounds like a smart kid. And the show wasn't total crap either. It was high school kids who were intelligent and doing something productive and interesting with their lives.

I suppose my dad's social worker salary didn't really do much to feed the ol trust fund, either.
