Wow, ummm... There are so many things wrong with this, first a baby shouldn't be up in the front part of the car they're supposed to be in back in their child safety seat (note the word safety). Second if the mother is breastfeeding and for whatever reason there is an accident the baby is then caught between some boob and the steering wheel and babies have soft heads.

@DancingFrog: Right. I was thinking in general terms. "A child is unlikely to know its home address by age 3" or something. I can't say that in German any more. :)

Since this particular mother was speaking generally--"If my child is hungry, I'm going to feed it," and not specifically, "If Bessie is hungry, I'm going to feed her," I don't think she was necessarily wrong.

@missbadkittyherself: well, technically, referring to a child in the general sense as "it" is correct. I am not a linguist, but I am pretty sure it's a leftover from the Germanic roots of English--in German, "Kind" is a neuter noun. The neutral pronoun for child is "it." I don't think she meant anything by it. (heh.)

Not to get all sanctimonious, but I recently swore off talking on the phone while driving (still legal in my state) because of a couple of incidents: a close family friends' 18 year old died in a car accident, a report announced that phone driving affects you, judgement-wise, the same as drunk driving, and the fact that I'm pregnant and I can't pretend the kid kicking me is just a fat belly anymore. Now it bothers me so much to see people driving and talking -- or twisting all the way into the back seat to get something, or texting, or whatever. I have to drive almost 2 hours a day and I have to really concentrate on not getting freaked out by it. Stupid people like this DON'T HELP.

Oh and the other day I almost hit a guy who was backing up toward me on a high-speed freeway onramp toward a blind turn. Then he wanted ME to back up around the blind corner, and then he yelled at me when I wouldn't. Sigh.

sweetie- you will end up with a stressed baby as well if you are not careful, it passes through. For your own sake try to cut back doing stressful things while you are preggers. Good luck.

@Leucadia: Isn't it crazy how you become such a better and more aware driver when you are pregnant? My husband was even worse than me. We'd be making a left turn and he'd wait until you could literally see NO ONE coming for about a half mile before he'd turn.

It was cute!

And it got even worse once we had a baby in the car seat. And I think that is great.

This makes me sad because she seems like the type of person who would hit something while feeding and driving, have the air bag deploy, then sue the automaker for making a ride with a "sensitive airbag". This is pure idiot behavior.

I feel bad for the baby :(

There should be a law that automatically suspends someone's drivers license if they drive with a kid who isn't buckled in or is in someone's lap, and child protective services should be called in for a home evaluation. If your license can be suspended for drunk driving or after too many speeding tickets, I think child endangerment ranks just as high as those crimes.

This story really has nothing to do with breastfeeding, except that she's using her kid's hunger as an excuse for endangering the lives of the baby, the other kids in the car, and everyone else on the road. Yes, the baby is hungry, but it can wait until you're not risking its life to feed it. I guarantee you, you can get to the side of the road or back home way before the kid starves to death.

I remember reading about a lady (also in Ohio, although she was from Michigan)who was caught driving on the Turnpike while breastfeeding and her defense was "My husband told me to do it and the bible says I have to do what my husband says."

Head, meet desk.

Ohio, why must you always be the setting for these stories? ***Says someone born and raised in Ohio. Really, we are not all like this...

@applejuice: I was just googling this old story (from 2003) and another part of this woman's defense was that in Michigan it is legal to BF an infant in a moving vehicle. She was on the OH Turnpike but she said since it was an interstate MI laws should apply (they didn't agree with her).

WTH? Michigan this is so unsafe! While the articles I read said that the law stated that it was meant to be a non-driver that was allowed to feed in a moving car, not the driver that is just a recipe for disaster.

I hope that was just an old law they had overlooked and that it has now been changed...

@misspie: I kid you not, the Dr Sears Breastfeeding Book has a page about nursing while the baby is in the car seat, including a little drawing illustrating how this would work. The mom still has her seat belt on and everything, she's just leaning over a little. So I tried it with my baby-- ha!! It's impossible, and I am extremely well-endowed so if anyone was gonna make it work it would be me.

That book has a ton of great advice, but a few things in there are just crazypants.

@Jennifer White Davidson: Not impossible... I have done it! It is not very comfortable though - I got serious back cricks. And it only worked when my kid was a little older and able to lean towards me a little.

But it saved us tons of stops on a road trip!

I actually know of one other person (the sister in law of a friend) who has done this before. But only "if there's no one else on the road". Yup, that makes it better.

Also, are hand-held cell calls still allowed in the US?

@haguenite: Cell phone laws are by state, in mine it's a $100 fine. I don't think Ohio has any, if my sister-in-law's driving habits are any indication.
