No lie -- my mom was the president of her high school's chapter of the Future Homemakers of America. She's now a special-needs teacher for elementary school kids who has a maid service come by every two weeks, though she still makes a mean Thanksgiving dinner.

Of course, she's really only a teacher because, as she says, she had three options when she was in college: teacher, nurse or secretary. No wonder she pushed me so hard in school.

The most riveting assembly we ever had was a dude from the gas company who stuck a fake hand that he was pretending was his in liquid nitrogen and then hit it with a hammer, shattering it into a million pieces. A bunch of kids started crying and one dude wet his pants (This was like third grade.) How do I get that job?

For a hilarious and well-written catalogue of these types of films from 1945-late 60's, Ken Smith's Mental Hygiene is a great book. And the topics of the fims span the full spectrum from home-ec to anti-drug abuse. The book is not overly-snarky and ironic, just gently mocking and truly enjoyable.
