thank you Elle for being so HILARIOUS! if only you would've used this AMAZING sense of humour while acting cause we all know you were the all time worst guest on Friends. keep it up!
Maybe she shies away from the term because she hasn't a clue what feminism means? As teenypanini mentioned way up in the comments, the definition of feminism has evolved to include that women have a right to choose whatever path they want to take in life, that women have a say in their society, and more importantly, that society shouldn't judge women by archaic standards of what is proper/improper, like oh, let's say wearing mini-dresses and bikinis past the age of 30 (or 40, in her case).
Well, DUH, men and women are biologically different, and people all over the world vary in skin color, and some people like having sex with members of the same sex...does this mean that laws shouldn't protect their basic human rights?
@Princess Weeweepants: I think that she has a clue, but that for someone as privileged as her, equal rights might take something away from her. It's like the people who think the existence of ladies night means that not only are we equal, women have it better.
You always have to seriously ask what people mean when they say men and women are "different," I think. It's like when people talk about hetero differences. What about these differences mean that men should get paid more or women shouldn't be president? Either you discover the bias or the person's argument gets incoherent and they look at you with desperation as they try to protect privilege while knowing it's wrong.
First, I completely disagree about the equal rights thing. I absolutely believe all people, regardless of skin, gender, religion, etc should have equal rights. I think the main differences between men and women are only biological (i.e women have vajay-jays, ovaries, produce milk etc and men have testes, penis, adam's apples, etc.) And these biological differences shouldn't be a reason for men and women to have unalienable rights.
Secondly, I think that the word feminism has changed a lot throughout time and now people don't really know what it means. obviously, during the suffragist movement, it basically meant that women had equal voting rights as men, and then it changed during second wave feminism to deal with social discrimination of women. and now, it's a little more challenging to define. I think the definition is different for every person.
For me, Feminism means that women are allowed to pursue their goals and dreams without legal and social discrimination. And it doesn't matter what a woman's goals are - whether it be to become a doctor, CEO, housewife, or anything else. I think this definition is a little idealistic because there is still so much discrimination, but we are making progress!
So, basically, Elle's definition of feminism is different from mine.
This is the same woman who once said she'd rather be thought of as The Body and not The Brain. I'd say we're going to need a bigger boat with this one.
You're right. With my vastly different needs, it's better for me to only make 75 cents to a man's dollar. If I have too much disposable income, I'll spend it on silly girly things like shoes and makeup, while the MENS pay for my heat. I don't need food anyhow, because I'm SUPPOSED to be skinny.
Congratulations, sweetheart. You're in a field where there isn't a glass ceiling for women (At least, if they're white, which she is). For the time being, how about you keep your pretty little mouth shut unless you're making sexy face for a spread in Vogue, mmmkay? You don't know what it's like to be making $400 a week, and seeing a guy with less experience and education make more money than you. Stop modeling your ignorance.
you dont know what you have until its taken from you.
You dont know how important it is to have the right to vote, until you dont.
You dont know how important it is to be able to appear, showing hair, skin, legs, feet, hands, fingers, wrists, in public, like your male counter parts, until you CANT.
You dont know what it means to be a woman, and be able to speak your mind, (as your males counter parts do), until you cant.
You dont understand the significance of the freedom it takes to say: "I dont believe in such...", until you are imprisoned, tortured, raped and murdered for simple dissent.
You do not understand feminism, and what its done for you, until you need it to come back, and save your ass.
@Bunsen Honeydew:
thanks thats what I always tell my friends whenever they start saying how feminism ruined their lives because men arent being "chivolrous" anymore.
There's a stereotypical perception that a feminist is somebody who believes in equal rights for men and women.
Oooh, you see what she did there ladies?
Usually when you hear the phrase "stereotypical perception" with regards to feminism, what follows is words like "lesbian," "butch," "Man hating," etc etc. You know, assumptions that pigeonhole and trivialize the movement. Instead, she said it's a stereotype that we all believe in equal rights. So what does that make us then? A bunch of butch, man hating lesbians?
Very true, women have different needs than men - for example, I NEED TAMPONS and men don't. That doesn't mean I should get paid less than them or my right to vote should be taken away.
I once had a guy repeatedly tell me that men and women could never be equal, because they were different, and different things are not equal. He believed they should have the same rights, just not that they could ever be equal. It took about 15 minutes of yelling at him before I realized he was a moron, but not an asshole.
